The Lumisphere Experience™: Shaping Tomorrow's Sustainable Future
The Museum of Tomorrow in Rio de Janeiro, in collaboration with Visions2030, is proud to announce the launch of The Lumisphere Experience™, an innovative immersive art installation that aims to engage the global community in envisioning a sustainable future. Running from October 2 to December 19, 2025, this unique initiative invites people from all walks of life to participate in shaping a vision for their ideal eco-friendly world. The experience is free and located at the stunning Santiago Calatrava-designed plaza of the museum.
The Lumisphere Experience™ consists of three interconnected domes inspired by the architectural genius of Buckminster Fuller, offering an expansive area of 8,000 square feet filled with multi-sensory experiences. Inside, the participants will be treated to 360-degree spectacular projections, immersive surround sound, and interactive storytelling elements that foster not only awe but also new perspectives on climate and sustainability issues. The core idea is simple yet profound: visitors are encouraged to reflect deeply on the question, "What do you want the future to look like?"
Through hands-on technology, participants will have the opportunity to convert their imaginations into vivid images displayed on massive nine-foot-high LED screens. This innovative approach not only allows for the expression of personal visions but also connects these dreams to real-world solutions, effectively promoting empowerment and action.
Carey Lovelace, the founder of Visions2030, emphasizes the need for a shift in how we perceive climate issues. "So often we deal with climate in terms of fear, imagining the worst. The Lumisphere presents possibilities and allows people to imagine a positive future. This is a new approach to climate action that delights rather than lectures," she expresses. By promoting this sense of optimism, the initiative aims to inspire action rather than panic.
Coinciding with Brazil's hosting of COP30 in Belém from November 10-21, 2025, and the Earthshot Prize ceremony on November 5, 2025, the Lumisphere Experience will not only mark its debut in Rio but serve as the first stop on a five-year global tour. Fabio Rubio Scarano, the curator of the Museum of Tomorrow and UNESCO Chair on Planetary Wellbeing, describes this experience as a "meditative and almost-psychedelic exercise in futures literacy." He believes that expanding the imagination is crucial to activating hope and sparking transformative action in the face of global challenges.
Co-designed with the San Francisco-based studio Minds Over Matter, the Lumisphere Experience also includes a research partnership with the Institute for the Future (IFTF). This collaboration aims to measure the impact of The Lumisphere Experience by tracking what the IFTF refers to as 'urgent optimism'—the ability to maintain hope and motivation even amid significant global adversities.
By transforming the shop window of climate change from a barrier to a space of opportunity, Lumisphere Experience encourages participants to envision a vibrant, sustainable future marked by ecological harmony. It challenges the status quo and invites everyone to be part of the conversation and solutions regarding our planet’s future.
In conclusion, the Lumisphere Experience™ transcends traditional exhibitions by encouraging active participation, reflection, and hope. Mark your calendars and immerse yourself in this groundbreaking journey of sustainability, creativity, and vision, designed for one billion dreamers across the globe.
