Western University Appoints Dr. Michael Marinello as Founding Dean of CGN-Northwest Site

Dr. Michael Marinello's Appointment as Site Dean

Western University of Health Sciences has made a significant stride in expanding its nursing program by appointing Dr. Michael Marinello as the founding Site Dean for the College of Graduate Nursing-Northwest, starting August 3, 2026. This transformative role is crucial for the advancement and growth of the college, as noted by Dr. Mary Lopez, Dean of CGN and CGN-Northwest. Educational Background

Dr. Marinello's academic journey began with a Master of Science in Nursing, Family Nurse Practitioner, obtained from California Baptist University in 2018. He enhanced his credentials by earning a Doctor of Nursing Practice from WesternU in 2025. Prior to his academic career, he gathered valuable experience as an emergency department nurse at Loma Linda University Health and as a family nurse practitioner in an urgent care setting. These experiences have deeply influenced his commitment to equipping nurses to respond to the diverse healthcare needs of their communities.

A Proven Academic Leader

Since joining WesternU's College of Graduate Nursing in 2018 as an assistant professor, Dr. Marinello has played multiple pivotal roles including leading the college's Simulation Center and directing the Master of Science in Nursing-Entry program since 2021. Dr. Paula Crone, WesternU Provost, praised his academic leadership, stating that Dr. Marinello's dedication to student success and interprofessional healthcare education prepares him well for this new leadership role.

Driving Expansion Efforts

One of Dr. Marinello's notable accomplishments has been his significant contribution to the development of the new MSN-E program in Oregon. As co-lead of the college’s expansion efforts, he was instrumental in securing Phase One approval from the Oregon State Board of Nursing, establishing regional clinical partnerships, and garnering support from healthcare and philanthropic leaders. The new MSN-E program is set to welcome its inaugural class in Fall 2027.

The MSN-E program offers an accelerated pathway for individuals holding bachelor’s degrees in other fields who aim to transition into nursing. This initiative will bring a wealth of diverse experiences and perspectives crucial for enhancing patient care and fostering strong healthcare teams. Tailored in close collaboration with local healthcare providers, the program is committed to producing practice-ready nurses prepared to tackle the workforce needs of Oregon and improve patient outcomes.
