Movers for America Responds to Global Household Goods Prime Contractor's Claims
On February 25, 2025, Movers for America, a coalition of over 1,100 moving professionals and independent contractors, released a statement addressing recent claims made by the Defense Department’s Global Household Goods Contract (GHC) prime contractor. The organization raised concerns about the transparency and accuracy of the contractor’s assertions regarding the progress and performance of the GHC.
The GHC was initially slated for full implementation nearly a year ago, but according to Movers for America, it has only managed to cover about 1% of annual domestic military relocations, which they assert paints a misleading picture of its effectiveness. They believe that military families and stakeholders deserve complete visibility into the program’s operations to facilitate well-informed decisions.
A significant point raised in the statement highlights extensive service issues encountered since the GHC's rollout commenced. Out of approximately 1,400 completed moves under this new contract, more than 1,000 military families have reported various issues including missed move dates, no-shows, and complications arising from the program's automated systems. Movers for America argued that it is unacceptable for service members to depend on personal GPS devices to monitor the status of their belongings due to systemic failures.
In stark contrast to the new system, the legacy moving program—managed by the U.S. Transportation Command (TRANSCOM)—reported impressive statistics with an 89% customer satisfaction rate, a 97% on-time pickup rate, and a 92% on-time delivery rate. These figures surpass some of the GHC's own benchmarks, indicating the potential deficiencies in the current program.
Moreover, Movers for America firmly argued that the legacy moving program adheres to rigorous performance standards and pricing regulations enforced by TRANSCOM, which retains the authority to reject any unreasonable rates. They dismissed claims suggesting that the legacy program has been overcharging the government, insisting that the numbers simply do not support such assertions.
The organization contended that ensuring high-quality and fairly priced moving services for military families must remain a top priority within the household goods sector. They criticized the perception that established moving professionals are working against the program’s success as being irresponsible, arguing that genuine concerns raised by service members deserve acknowledgment and action.
As a culmination of their statement, Movers for America reiterated their commitment to providing a viable and competitive environment for military relocations, stressing the need for improvements in the GHC to avoid further detriment to the families they seek to serve. They called for a collective effort from policymakers and industry stakeholders to create a system that genuinely benefits military families during their transitions.
