Snowflake and Japan Airlines: Pioneering Data Utilization
On May 19, Snowflake Inc., a leading provider of AI data cloud services based in Tokyo, held a press briefing focused on Japan Airlines' (JAL) implementation of Streamlit. The event featured insightful presentations from JAL's Minoru Shoji, who leads the Digital Strategy Group, and Amanda Kelly, Co-Founder and COO of Streamlit at Snowflake. Together, they elucidated how the collaboration is transforming JAL's business operations.
The session began with Amanda outlining the significance of Streamlit, an open-source UI library designed for Python. Highlighting its collaborative strength with Snowflake's robust data infrastructure, Amanda emphasized that this combination facilitates rapid scaling, effective cost management, and expedited transition from development to operational phases. She reassured attendees of the seamless execution of Streamlit within Snowflake, eliminating concerns regarding environment setup and security, and underscored the importance of leveraging Copilot to aid in code creation and management.
Continuing the discussion, Minoru Shoji shared JAL's strategic approach towards data utilization and detailed specific use cases involving Snowflake and Streamlit. Following a move from on-premises systems, JAL has gradually transitioned to Snowflake since 2023. The objectives of adopting this platform include responding agilely to business changes, accelerating digital transformation (DX), promoting effective data usage, and maintaining flexibility in addressing specialized needs. Shoji particularly noted the ease of internal and external data sharing, describing it as a primary attraction of this transition.
Over the past year, JAL has successfully navigated this shift, working towards enhancing internal data connectivity. The airline aims to further the delivery of customer value by integrating external data. Shoji’s introduction to Streamlit originated through a recommendation from Snowflake, and the implementation drew inspiration from case studies at NTT DoCoMo. By visualizing data aggregated within Snowflake through Streamlit, JAL has focused on building a framework that simplifies sharing and utilizing analytical results across relevant departments.
With the support of frontline employees, Shoji has been identifying, collecting, and accumulating essential internal and external data necessary for resolving challenges. The initiative also involves refining metadata to ensure data comprehensibility for all stakeholders. Streamlit application development is undertaken in iterative cycles, each spanning three months. Current projects include visualizing KPIs, predicting in-flight service metrics, and forecasting food waste at airports. These endeavors augment traditional analytical methods.
Shoji encapsulated the vision for Snowflake and Streamlit, targeting business results such as improved productivity, enhanced customer satisfaction, and better financial outcomes through data-driven decision-making. He concluded by highlighting JAL's commitment to its ESG strategy, themed around “Connections are Wings to the Future,” aiming to contribute to a prosperous society (Society 5.0) through data provision.
