Advanced Energy Grid Technology Embraces Wind and Solar as Main Power Sources

Innovating Energy Solutions in Shenzhen

The 3rd International Digital Energy Expo (IDEE) kicked off today in Shenzhen, gathering industry leaders, organization representatives, experts, and partners from around the globe. This significant event serves as a platform for discussions surrounding the latest trends in the digital energy sector, innovative technology applications, and comparative business practices aimed at promoting the industry's high-quality development.

In his keynote address, Zhou Jianjun, Vice President of Huawei and President of Global Marketing, Sales, and Services for Huawei Digital Power, focused on the theme, "Advanced Energy Grid Technology: Accelerating Wind and Solar as Main Power Sources." He highlighted a critical shift from concept to action regarding carbon neutrality, noting that the rapid increase in wind and solar penetration poses substantial challenges to electrical grids and power systems due to the high ratio of renewable energy and power electronics equipment.

Huawei is leveraging its ongoing technological innovations and expertise to enhance grid formation capabilities across various scenarios. The aim is to accelerate the adoption of wind and solar as primary energy sources and initiate a new era in engaging multi-scenario grid formations. This endeavor aligns with the global emphasis on creating versatile and robust energy systems capable of sustaining a green transition.

For over a decade, Huawei has been at the forefront of advancing grid formation technologies, shifting focus from grid support to full-scale grid creation. By integrating their proprietary hardware, high-capacity and reliable power devices, and intelligent digital controllers, Huawei promotes a transition to a comprehensive grid formation model. This model covers essential functions including short-circuit levels, virtual inertia support, broadband oscillation damping, rapid primary frequency response, and seamless grid entry/exit transitions.

These grid technology advancements have set reference points for global green transformations, widely applied in commercial contexts. In the Middle East, Huawei's grid technologies aided in establishing the world's largest microgrid powered entirely by renewable energy, successfully enduring adverse weather impacts over two years. Furthermore, in Xizang, China, Huawei facilitated the implementation of a grid-forming Energy Storage System (ESS) solution in a high-altitude, cold, and weak grid environment for a 30 MW PV + 6 MW/24 MWh project, achieving a significant output increase from 1.5 MW to 12 MW compared to other solutions, thus amplifying project revenue by 75%.

The groundbreaking developments extend to the Philippines, where the world's largest integrated PV + ESS project has embarked on bridging the energy divide, incorporating 3.5 GW PV systems and 4.5 GWh grid-forming ESS. This project utilizes coordinated control and land-start technologies at the gigawatt level to ensure stable power output for 13 hours daily.

Huawei is committed to leading the sector's digital and smart technology innovation. They have achieved the first complete device-edge-cloud synergy for PV + ESS intelligence, allowing efficient and intelligent management throughout the entire lifecycle of energy plants. Automated operation and maintenance processes drastically reduce operational interventions, maximizing revenue from energy trading.

By integrating Artificial Intelligence across all planning, construction, maintenance, and operational processes, Huawei has successfully decreased engineering design errors by 40% and boosted operational efficiency by 50%, furthermore increasing operational income by over 10%. This transformative approach aids clients in establishing secure, efficient, and intelligent renewable energy facilities, propelling the industry toward a new era of automation.

Quality remains paramount for sustainability, with Huawei Digital Power steadfastly advocating excellence. Through systematic and process-focused capabilities combined with an end-to-end quality strategy, Huawei cultivates high standards at every product lifecycle stage, from demand specification to material management and delivery. The goal is to consistently generate greater value for customers, improve industry standards, and optimize energy market mechanisms.

In continuation of their efforts to accelerate the integration of wind and solar as primary energy sources, Huawei strives to collaborate with industry stakeholders, electricity grid operators, industry associations, and standard organizations, ensuring large-scale, standardized, and high-quality industry development is achieved. The journey towards a sustainable and smart energy future is well underway and Huawei positions itself as a pivotal player in this transformative landscape.
