AstroX Strengthens Leadership with New Director

AstroX, a private space startup based in Namie, Fukushima, has taken a significant step forward by appointing Sumito Togo as its new Director. Previously serving as Chief Strategy Officer (CSO), Togo's transition to this higher role comes as part of a strategic move to enhance the company's leadership structure following a successful fundraising round.

In a recent announcement, AstroX disclosed that it had successfully closed its Series A funding, securing a substantial 1.8 billion yen (approximately $16 million USD) through loans and other financial means. This investment is anticipated to accelerate AstroX's ambitious projects, particularly the development of satellite-launching rockets using the innovative Rockoon method, which utilizes balloons for aerial rocket launches.

Leadership Profile: Sumito Togo

Sumito Togo is well-equipped for his expanded role, bringing a wealth of experience to AstroX. A graduate of the University of Tokyo's Faculty of Engineering, Togo pursued advanced studies at the university's graduate school, where he focused on next-generation rocket propellants at JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency). His career began at McKinsey & Company in 2005, where he addressed diverse management challenges for clients primarily in the IT and manufacturing sectors.

From 2010 onward, Togo contributed to Google, promoting marketing strategies for Japanese small and medium-sized enterprises and developing Google Maps business initiatives. Subsequently, he participated in Free Inc. in 2013, serving in various leadership roles, including Director of COO and CFO, and ultimately as Director of CPO until September 2024.

After joining AstroX in January 2025, Togo leveraged his expertise as CSO to tackle critical management issues, including spearheading Series A funding efforts.

In his new position, Togo expressed a commitment to uphold the strong vision driving AstroX’s initiatives. He stated, "While my passion for AstroX’s mission remains unchanged, my responsibilities as a director will allow me to strive even harder towards our goal of reclaiming Japan's top position in space development." His leadership is expected to not only drive the company forward but to inspire a team oriented towards achieving remarkable feats in the cosmos.
