Experience the Future of Semiconductor Production: A Hands-on Program for High School Students

Okayama Prefectural Okayama Hoshin High School students had a unique opportunity to explore cutting-edge semiconductor manufacturing with support from Okayama University. This initiative involved a factory tour of Estakaya Electronics, located in Satoshima, Okayama Prefecture. The program aimed to enhance students' understanding of the local industry and allow them to explore future career paths in a vital sector.

In preparation for the visit, students expressed their motivations during the bus ride, sharing their interests in learning about semiconductor technologies available in Okayama and gaining insights into the intricacies of manufacturing. Upon arrival, they were warmly welcomed by the company's Director and General Manager, Shinji Sakao, who encouraged them to discover their passions and delve deep into their explorations.

The tour commenced with an engaging workshop on disassembling smartphones, where students had the chance to interact directly with the internal circuitry and components of devices they frequently use. This hands-on activity allowed them to better understand how semiconductors play a significant role in daily life and the technology they are accustomed to.

Next, students were guided through Estakaya's OSAT (Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test) production line. They experienced the mesmerizing sight of ultra-thin silicon wafers shimmering with rainbow hues—a testament to the delicate nature of semiconductor materials and the rigorous quality control that ensures excellence in production. The tour also featured the observation of high-speed wire bonding processes and nano-level structure analysis using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), highlighting world-class precision technologies.

Following the factory tour, the students engaged in a roundtable discussion with young employees, including recent graduates of Okayama University. This interaction provided valuable insights into different career trajectories, work environments, and personal experiences from their time as students. Participants offered advice about the semiconductor industry, emphasizing that opportunities exist not only for those in science and engineering but also for those with humanities backgrounds. Feedback collected afterward rated the experience positively, with an average satisfaction score of 3.67 out of 4. Many expressed newfound awareness of the complexities involved in semiconductor production and the critical support they provide to a wide range of industries. Students indicated a strong interest in pursuing engineering or information technology studies at university, with a focus on semiconductors.
