Introduction to CalTa M42
CalTa Inc., headquartered in Minato-ku, Tokyo, in collaboration with Map4 Corporation from Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, has expanded the application scenarios for their innovative solution, CalTa M42. This technology allows for the acquisition of high-quality wide-area point cloud data more easily and at a lower cost than traditional methods. Previously, users had to manually hold devices to collect point cloud data. However, the development of a specialized fixture has eliminated the need for vehicle modifications, enabling the acquisition of data directly from operational trains.
Features of CalTa M42
The CalTa M42 is designed for easy and affordable collection of high-quality point cloud data. Its main features include:
- - No need for specialized expertise or high-performance PCs.
- - Simple data upload after collection without requiring internal operations.
- - Automatic removal of noise such as people and vehicles, resulting in high-resolution point cloud data.
- - Overlaying point cloud data with images on the TRANCITY map platform for enhanced visualization.
Overview of Development
Traditionally, acquiring point cloud data within railway environments was limited to nighttime operations, presenting challenges for improving working conditions for railway personnel and the inability to capture clear data. In contrast, capturing data during the day using dedicated vehicles faced obstacles due to the inflexibility of such operations.
To address these issues, CalTa and Map4 developed a specialized fixture. This innovation allows for the acquisition of clear, low-cost point clouds from daytime operational trains without needing to modify the vehicles themselves.
Demonstration at Rail Technology Expo 2025
CalTa and Map4 are currently showcasing their technology at the 9th Rail Technology Expo 2025, held at Makuhari Messe from November 26 to 29, 2025. Attendees can visit their booth (J-81) to see the technology in action and learn more about its applications. For those interested, entry is free, but pre-registration is required via their official website:
