SWCA Environmental Consultants to Lead Assessment for Utah's High Desert Trail Project
SWCA Chosen to Oversee Environmental Assessment for Utah's High Desert Trail
SWCA Environmental Consultants has taken a significant step forward in conserving the natural landscapes of Utah by being selected by the Utah Division of Outdoor Recreation (DOR) to lead the environmental compliance processes for the ambitious High Desert Trail project. This extensive trail, stretching over 700 miles from Gunlock State Park to Snowville, aims to enhance outdoor recreation and stimulate local economies through tourism.
About the High Desert Trail
The High Desert Trail is a collaborative initiative that involves partnerships among various state agencies, local governments, federal land managers, and trail user groups. Its objective is to create a cohesive and resilient trail experience that not only boosts recreation but also supports the economies of many communities along its path.
This extensive trail stretches across seven counties and includes multiple Bureau of Land Management offices and U.S. Forest Service lands, making it a vital component of Utah’s outdoor offerings. The proposed route features a variety of terrains and attractions, designed for multi-use access, thus inviting a wide audience of outdoor enthusiasts, from hikers to bikers.
Currently, the trail utilizes existing public roads, but the project's formal recognition is pivotal. It will enable each county involved to designate staging areas, strategically coordinate maintenance activities, and install signage. These actions are essential for enhancing user experience while ensuring the environmental integrity of both the natural and historical resources that lie along the trail’s course.
The Role of SWCA in the Assessment Process
Gretchen Semerad, a senior environmental planner at SWCA, expressed excitement about this collaboration. She noted, “Our Salt Lake City team not only works here, but plays here, too, giving us an in-depth understanding of local land management.” This personal connection to the landscape highlights the firm’s commitment to applying their expertise in ways that directly benefit local environments and communities.
As part of their initiative, SWCA will engage in several tasks critical to the success of the project. This includes facilitating a public comment period for community input, conducting agency meetings, and performing thorough cultural resources surveys. They will identify potential environmental impacts and prepare a comprehensive environmental assessment, paying close attention to the insights gathered from public comments, all while ensuring that cultural and ecological resources are conserved.
With over 560 NEPA-related documents and more than 300 cultural resources projects completed in Utah over the past five years, SWCA brings valuable experience to this project. They are focused on creating sustainable solutions that marry environmental concerns with community needs.
