Prescott College Celebrates Renaming of Tucson Park

On February 28, 2025, Prescott College President Dr. Barbara Morris officially recognized the renaming of Tucson's Christopher Columbus Park to Danny Lopez Park. This significant change honors longtime educator and Prescott College alumnus Danny Lopez, known for his dedication to the Tohono O'odham people and his role as a mentor, singer, and storyteller who inspired countless students.

The Tucson City Council made this decision on February 19, 2025, following a formal proposal to initiate the renaming process. Dr. Morris expressed gratitude for Lopez's impactful legacy, noting, "Danny Lopez has inspired generations while sharing the cultural richness of the O'odham people. Renaming the park serves as a step toward re-indigenizing the land and acknowledging the history and contributions of indigenous peoples in this area."
