Love is in the Blood Donation Campaign
Every year, from July 1st to 31st, Japan observes the 'Love is in the Blood Donation' campaign. This initiative, launched by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, prefectures, and the Japanese Red Cross Society, aims to enhance awareness about blood donation across the country. Throughout the month, a variety of events and campaigns are organized with the collaboration of local volunteer organizations to further promote this worthy cause.
What is Blood Donation?
Blood donation is a voluntary act in which healthy individuals provide their blood, free of charge, to assist patients in need of transfusions and plasma-derived therapies due to illnesses or surgical procedures. It plays a critical role in healthcare, as blood transfusions are essential methods used to replenish blood components in patients experiencing deficiencies. Plasma-derived products, containing vital proteins like clotting factors and immunoglobulins extracted from plasma, are increasingly crucial in modern medical treatments.
The Necessity of Blood Donation
Unlike other medical supplies, donated blood cannot be stored for prolonged periods, nor can it be artificially manufactured. In recent years, the demand for specific plasma-derived products, such as immunoglobulins, has surged dramatically. Therefore, maintaining a steady and diverse blood donation supply is crucial. This calls for ongoing and generous contributions from the community to ensure that transfusions are viable whenever required.
Engaging the Younger Generation
A significant portion of blood products, utilized primarily for elderly patients, sees about 88% of them used for individuals aged 50 and older. Currently, however, only about 53% of blood donors are under 50 years of age, highlighting the importance of the younger generation's involvement in blood donation. Unfortunately, there has been a noticeable decline in donations from both young adults (ages 10 to 30) and individuals in their 40s. As Japan continues to grapple with a rapidly aging population, securing a reliable, future blood supply could become more challenging.
Since blood can’t be archived for long periods, it is vital to collect enough donations to ensure medical facilities have the resources they need. Engaging younger individuals in blood donation is essential for sustaining supply in the future.
