Kobe City Launches Third Phase of Global Startup Support Initiative

Kobe City is stepping up its efforts to attract foreign entrepreneurs and startups through its Kobe Global Startup Support program, which has just entered its third phase under the management of Innovation Dojo Japan. Founded by Joshua Flanery, the organization aims to bolster international business by providing essential support tailored to the unique needs of foreign entities aiming to establish themselves in Japan.

As part of the program, Innovation Dojo Japan has identified and selected over 70 international startups based on feedback from local businesses. This engagement has led to fruitful collaborations among various firms, resulting in multiple non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) and the initiation of proof of concept (PoC) projects. These initiatives have paved the way for direct participation in the upcoming 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo, showcasing tangible results from the program.

This year's focus not only includes supporting startups but also emphasizes communicating the city’s advantages and support systems internationally. Plans are underway to enhance collaboration with overseas startup support organizations and host a minimum of 10 events related to incoming international delegations. This seeks to create a feedback loop that boosts interest in Kobe, aiding startups in their journey to growth and establishment.

Moreover, efforts will also be made to engage local companies to raise awareness of the initiative and establish a robust support system for incoming foreign businesses.

Target Participants and Fields

The Kobe Global Startup Support program is tailored for foreign entrepreneurs, startup companies, and business leaders looking to establish a corporate presence in the city. Ideal candidates will primarily be engaged in one of the following sectors:

- High-tech businesses leveraging advanced technologies (such as IT, health, medical welfare, environment, and logistics)
- Enterprises aimed at enhancing the value of existing industries or inducing innovation
- Projects geared towards solving societal challenges, contributing to the SDGs and beyond

Program Duration

This initiative is set to run until March 31, 2026.

Upcoming Events

Among the exciting programs planned, two notable events include:

- Discover Latvia: A Gateway to Innovation and Growth on May 12, 2025, featuring investment opportunities in Latvia, a pitch session by nine startups, and business matching activities.
- Kobe x Africa Initiative 2025 on May 16, 2025. This event focuses on the potential of the African market and will include keynote speeches, case studies from Japanese companies, and panel discussions between African and Japanese startups.

Both events aim to facilitate connections and information exchange between Kobe’s business ecosystem and international markets.
