Xi'an's Air Silk Road: A New Industrial Era Unfolds

In April 2026, Xi'an hosted the Routes Asia 2026, an esteemed event highlighting aviation and route development across the Asia-Pacific region. Under the theme "Gathering in Xi'an for a Shared Future," this conference took place from April 14 to 16, attracting significant participation from 92 airlines, 128 airport operators, and 32 governmental tourism organizations spanning 52 countries. Among these, 77 airlines and 80 airport operators hailed from 28 Asian nations, enriching the dialogue on regional air connectivity.

One of the key outcomes of this prestigious gathering was the launch of five new international all-cargo flight routes, as collaborations were signed between Airport New City of the Xixian New Area and major airlines such as CMA CGM Air Cargo, CAMEX Airlines, Georgian Airways, and Geosky Airlines. With this, Xi'an Xianyang International Airport now operates 62 international and regional passenger routes, notably strengthening its links to five Central Asian countries, thereby enhancing its global connectivity.

In the previous year, the airport handled an impressive 48.5 million passengers (including nearly 2 million international travelers) and processed 335,000 tons of cargo, achieving peak operational capacity with 61 aircraft movements per hour. This impressive performance reflects Xi'an's strategic focus on developing its aerospace industry, which has become a central pillar of the city's economic agenda.

Xi'an has recognized the potential of the aerospace sector, particularly in rocket propulsion and satellite fabrication, and aims to establish itself as a leading center for civil aerospace activities. Notably, the city is home to 3,987 commercial aerospace firms – the highest concentration in China – creating a robust ecosystem involving critical areas such as rocket engines, satellite production, telemetry, tracking and control (TTC), and data applications. This positioning allows Xi'an to boast the country’s most comprehensive supply chain in the commercial aerospace industry.

As part of its broader vision encapsulated in the 15th Five-Year Plan, Xi'an aims to cultivate an industrial innovation technology hub, focusing on civil aviation, low-altitude economy, commercial space exploration, integrated circuits, new energy vehicles (NEVs), and renewable energy sectors. The city targets the development of globally competitive and innovative products that will shift it into a leading global aerospace cluster.

The heart of Xi'an’s aerospace district, Yanliang, serves as the core of this ambitious industrial cluster, solidifying the city as a pivotal player in the Chinese aviation landscape. In a strategic move launched in March of the previous year, Xi'an embarked on a three-year action plan aimed at enhancing large aircraft capacity. The goal is to achieve a total aviation industry output of 150 billion yuan (approximately 22 billion US dollars) by 2027, establishing an internationally competitive large aircraft cluster.

Moreover, Xi'an's ambition as a national center for electronic information has birthed a thriving ecosystem shaped by the semiconductor and photonics industry. By the end of 2025, this sector is expected to include 233 companies exceeding designated scales, contributing a significant 15% to the city's overall industrial production, thereby underlining the city's economic diversification efforts.

In conclusion, the Air Silk Road serves as more than just an initiative; it symbolizes Xi'an's commitment to transforming itself into a global industrial powerhouse, leveraging its rich historical legacy and modern technological advancements. As the world watches, Xi'an is poised to redefine its role on the global stage, bridging both history and innovation to foster unprecedented industrial growth.
