Kickoff Campaign for Nuclear Weapons Ban Treaty Launches in Tokyo

Kickoff Campaign for Nuclear Weapons Ban Treaty in Tokyo

On September 5th, from 2 PM to 3:30 PM, a significant event will take place at the Tokyo Co-op Federation Hall in Nakano. Pal System Tokyo, led by Chairperson Yoko Nishimura, is organizing a kickoff meeting for a signature campaign aimed at urging the Japanese government to sign and ratify the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). This event is a collaborative effort with four other consumer cooperatives operating in Tokyo, including Co-op Mirai, Tohto Co-op, Seikatsu Club Coop Tokyo, and Natural Food Club Co-op. The initiative is also responding to a request from the Tōyūkai, a general incorporated association representing atomic bomb survivors.

As we approach the 81st anniversary of the end of World War II, this campaign is especially poignant. The focus of the kickoff meeting is to mobilize support among consumers and stakeholders, emphasizing Japan's unique position as the only nation to have experienced atomic bombings. The Japanese Council of Atomic Bomb Victims (Nihon Higaisha Dantai Kyogikai) is spearheading this movement, advocating for Japan to take a leading role in global nuclear disarmament efforts.

The event will also feature representatives from the five cooperatives detailing their peace initiatives and the significance of signing the treaty, which aligns with international efforts towards nuclear abolition. The cooperative sector aims to play a crucial role in building a peaceful society amidst the ongoing global tensions, including Russia's invasion of Ukraine and military actions involving Iran.

The kickoff meeting is anticipated to gather around 80 representatives from various cooperatives. Participants will hear testimonies from atomic bomb survivors and discussions on the importance of this campaign for Japan's future and the global nuclear disarmament narrative.

As we look forward to 2026, a pivotal year that includes both the Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and the inaugural Review Conference of the TPNW, it is essential for Japan to reaffirm its dedication to nuclear disarmament. The ongoing geopolitical unrest underscores the urgent need for a collective approach to peace and security.

Pal System Tokyo is committed to raising awareness about the importance of peace through partnerships with various organizations. Their continuous efforts aim to foster a society free from nuclear weapons, ensuring that the lessons learned from history guide future generations.

The details of the kickoff meeting are as follows:
  • - Date: September 5, 2026
  • - Time: 14:00 - 15:30
  • - Venue: Tokyo Co-op Federation Hall, 3rd Floor Conference Room, Nakano, Tokyo
