NexaScience Launches AIRAS AI Research Automation System for Commercialization

NexaScience Unveils AI Research Automation System AIRAS

NexaScience, based in Shibuya, Tokyo, has announced the significant advancement in the development and commercial rollout of its research automation AI system, AIRAS (AI Research Automation System). This initiative aims to bolster support for the development of AIRAS and unveil a commercial product named NexaPapers, which leverages this innovative technology.

Pioneering Research Automation with AIRAS

NexaScience's AIRAS is an open-source AI software designed to autonomously execute the research process—from literature search to generating integrated ideas, planning experiments, implementing them, and writing papers. The project is spearheaded by Wataru Kumagai of NexaScience under the AutoRes initiative, with contributions from various experts, including Tomo Tanaka.

Key Features of AIRAS

1. Complete Autonomy in Research Processes: AIRAS integrates multiple specialized AI agents that handle distinct stages of the research workflow, optimizing information transmission among agents to enhance consistency and efficiency in research.
2. Flexible Customization for Individual Research Workflows: Users can customize the research and development workflow as per their requirements, integrating unique processes as needed.
3. Incorporation of Version Management: AIRAS adopts a version control concept akin to Git, allowing researchers to track and document the experimental attempts, making it compatible with generative AI systems.

As part of its commitment, NexaScience is also supporting AIRAS's ongoing development and the subsequent rollout of its Nexa series products, such as NexaPapers, NexaPatents, and NexaCollab. Through the GENIAC Project, involving the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry and NEDO, NexaScience aims to enhance AI agents' capabilities involved in research, offering comprehensive solutions for various stakeholders.

Commercialization of NexaPapers

The commercialization of AIRAS leads to the launch of NexaPapers, which extends enhanced functionalities and user interfaces for its AI agents. Furthermore, NexaScience is initiating the development of an AI agent adapter for multi-agent optimization, under the support of the GENIAC project. This will integrate improved UX/UI and enterprise features into NexaPapers, facilitating a seamless transition toward innovative product development.

Call for Pilot Users

NexaScience seeks enterprises and research institutions willing to participate as pilot users of AIRAS's product version. Interested parties can join the waiting list through the provided link. This step is part of AIRAS's societal validation efforts, with the aim of gathering user feedback and refining the product.

The Growing Need for the Nexa Series

With the exponential increase in research papers and patents globally, R&D professionals face challenges in managing the overwhelming influx of information. These challenges include overlooking relevant data, losing opportunities for idea generation, and duplicated research. Simultaneously, there is an urgent demand for expedited research outcomes, with Japan's share of top-cited papers in decline.

NexaScience's Nexa series aims to revolutionize the entire process of R&D and its commercialization. The key offerings include:

  • - NexaPapers: Supports researchers and engineers in autonomously accelerating processes from literature review to experiment execution.
  • - NexaPatents: Facilitates patent surveying and strategy development autonomously for IP professionals.
  • - NexaCollab: Assists businesses and investors in assessing research developments for commercialization.

Nexa's series is designed to create an experience where it feels as though a team of experts is aiding users throughout their creative endeavors in R&D. Users will see a multi-agent AI framework actively participating, guided by their innovative activities, thus acting as a support system for various R&D-related tasks.

Future Steps in Product Offerings

NexaScience plans to gradually introduce products through the following formats:
  • - Individual Specialized AI Agents: Available on demand for specific tasks.
  • - Customized Autonomous Systems: Tailored workflows that integrate entire processes into a cohesive system.
  • - Contracted R&D Services: Providing outsourced R&D aimed at producing impactful results.
