New Financial Education Initiative for Children in Japan
In recent developments, the
Japan Financial Education Support Organization has initiated a remarkable program aimed at ensuring financial education reaches children and young people from diverse backgrounds. This initiative was made possible by the acceptance of grants from the
Rohto Children's Dream Fund, sponsored by
Peace Winds Japan and Rohto Pharmaceutical Company.
The organization aims to conduct financial education workshops at three key locations:
Tokyo,
Kyoto, and
Ishikawa. It recognizes that children's access to knowledge about finance, law, and contracts is often affected by their home environment, economic situation, and the availability of learning opportunities outside of school. The objective is to bridge these gaps and empower youngsters in their decision-making processes related to education, employment, consumption, and life planning.
The Program's Vision
Unlike traditional education models that focus solely on knowledge acquisition, this project emphasizes learning that equips children with the skills to protect their future and broaden their choices. To engage young learners, the program incorporates creative expression activities, such as
haikus and video production. Participants will tackle real-life financial, legal, and contractual issues, transforming these topics into relatable subjects they can communicate in their own words.
Over the years, this organization has contributed to financial education by organizing various initiatives, including the
FES Contest, which encourages high school students to create educational videos for elementary students. The current grant program will expand its reach by collaborating with community-based organizations and ensuring that necessary educational opportunities are accessible to all children, regardless of their background.
Workshop Details by Region
Tokyo
On
July 14, 2026, a special financial lecture titled “Exploring the Eight Powers of Money” will be held at
Techriere Saginomiya in
Nakano, Tokyo. Participants will investigate money's relationship with everyday life through eight key aspects: spending, earning, paying taxes, saving, preparing, gifting, borrowing, and growing wealth. The workshop aims to provide foundational knowledge that students will need for their future academic and career choices, including related future workshops and video productions.
Kyoto
The financial education workshop in
Kyoto, scheduled for
August 17, 2026, will take place at the
WAKASA&CO.KYOTO premises with support from
Wakasa Seikatsu Co., Ltd. Children from care facilities operated by the company will also join the event. Participants will engage in an
interesting haiku competition centered on common financial and contract-related issues, utilizing personal experiences to create short videos that reflect their understanding of financial topics in an expressive way.
Ishikawa
From
June to September,
Ishikawa will host a continuous financial education program focusing on students from various backgrounds, including those in child welfare facilities and aspiring creators. This program will encompass lessons on the
Eight Powers of Money, practical skills workshops, and certification tests aimed at gauging participants' comprehension and growth through tangible outcomes beyond just events.
Key Program Features
This initiative stands out by promoting financial education as a medium for children to assess their lives and futures. Knowledge in finance, law, and contracts is crucial for ensuring safety in living and expanding options for the future. Yet, disparities still exist in access to this knowledge based on familial and societal circumstances.
To address these challenges, the organization is collaborating with local partners, support entities, and businesses to foster an environment where children can learn and articulate their thoughts confidently. By delivering financial education across various locations, they aim to ensure that every child, irrespective of their situation, has the opportunity to broaden their horizons and forge their own paths.
