Hanwha Power Systems to Supply CO₂ Compressors for European Power Plant with CCUS Technology

Hanwha Power Systems Expands Its Influence in CCUS Technology

Recently, Hanwha Power Systems secured an important contract to provide CO₂ Mechanical Vapor Recompression (MVR) compressors for a cutting-edge combined-cycle power plant in Europe. This initiative underscores the company's commitment to supporting global efforts toward carbon neutrality through innovative energy solutions.

Enhancing Energy Efficiency with MVR Compressors

The MVR compressors play a pivotal role in improving energy efficiency in the power plant. By converting low-pressure steam into high-temperature steam, the MVR system optimizes heat recovery processes. This mechanism significantly reduces both energy consumption and operational expenditure (OPEX), presenting a compelling economic case alongside environmental benefits.

The project aims to integrate Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) technology into the power plant, which is engineered to minimize carbon emissions. By accommodating a facility structure dedicated to real-time CO₂ capture and treatment, the plant represents a substantial step forward in industrial decarbonization. Commercial operations are slated to begin by late 2028, heralding a new era in sustainable energy production.

The Role of MVR Compressors in CO₂ Capture

A critical component in the CO₂ capture process, Hanwha’s MVR compressors ensure the reliability of the system by supplying stable high-temperature steam to the stripper unit, responsible for isolating CO₂ from amine solutions. The design also allows for the reuse of low-temperature steam generated during the capturing process, which not only maintains continuous capture cycles but also further decreases the overall energy usage of the facility.

This multifaceted approach to energy efficiency positions Hanwha Power Systems as a leader in the low-carbon power generation sector. While the company specializes in CO₂ capture, it is also expanding its portfolio to include a comprehensive range of CO₂ compression solutions capable of handling pressures exceeding 150 bar. This includes services for storage, enhanced oil recovery, sequestration, utilization, and transportation—all essential elements of the CCUS value chain.

Strategic Vision for Global Carbon Neutrality

Gi-hoon Do, the Head of the Equipment Business Division at Hanwha Power Systems, highlighted the strategic importance of this project, stating that it epitomizes the company’s stronghold in the emerging CCUS sector. He emphasized that Hanwha’s advanced technology and execution capabilities will strengthen its role as a trusted partner in achieving global carbon neutrality objectives. The company is poised to leverage its technological leadership and further innovate in the clean energy landscape.

This project demonstrates Hanwha Power Systems' ongoing dedication to sustainability and innovation. By contributing to the European power plant with advanced CO₂ MVR compressors, the company is not only paving the way for more responsible energy production but also setting the stage for future developments in environmental technology and carbon management.

As the world moves forward, partnerships like these are crucial for driving and achieving substantial reductions in carbon emissions across industries, reinforcing the collective goal for a greener and more sustainable future.
