New Commercial Manga 'Sakajo: The Plasterer Toko' Launches Amidst Industry Insights

Introduction

In an interesting collaboration between the non-profit organization LEGIKA, based in Shinagawa, Tokyo, and Yabuhara, a prominent wholesaler of building materials, a new commercial manga titled 'Sakajo: The Plasterer Toko' is set to debut on April 24, 2026. This manga, which will be available on over 130 digital platforms, aims to shed light on the often-overlooked craft of plastering in Japan.

Background of the Project

As interest in manga as a marketing tool grows, LEGIKA has embarked on a unique project that diverges from ordinary PR comics. Instead of simply promoting a product or service, the manga is designed as a narrative that encapsulates the knowledge and expertise of the plastering industry, providing a platform for educating a broader audience about this traditional craft. This approach represents a fresh and innovative business model where companies utilize their industry knowledge to create valuable commercial art.

Yabuhara, which has been operational since 1901 and has a rich history in the construction material industry, initiated this project during an internal competition aimed at launching a new business venture. The central question raised during this competition was how to convey the art of plastering to those outside the industry.

The Art of Plastering

Plastering is an essential aspect of Japanese architecture; however, it is not widely perceived or understood by the general public. There is a growing concern regarding the declining number of skilled plasterers, and Yabuhara, with over a century of experience, recognized the need to communicate the depth and pride of this craft to the masses. They chose manga as a medium to effectively reach a wide audience, blending the expertise of LEGIKA's manga creation capabilities with Yabuhara's industry insights.

Synopsis of 'Sakajo: The Plasterer Toko'

The story centers around Toko Tsutsui, a 19-year-old apprentice entering the predominantly male world of plastering. She admires her grandfather's prowess and chooses to pursue a career in this field, despite the harsh realities she faces on the job. Toko grapples with insufficient opportunities for learning and is often assigned only minor tasks. She confronts the challenges of meeting the physical demands of her work and struggles with the gap between her expectations and the reality in the industry.

Yet, her resolve to stay in the field is unwavering, driven by fond memories of listening to the sound of the plastering trowel during her childhood—a sound that symbolizes her family's legacy. This manga not only charts Toko’s growth as a skilled laborer but also reassesses the value and appeal of plastering from a fresh perspective.

Comments from Yabuhara

Tohru Sugita, a representative from Yabuhara’s Sapporo branch, shared his hopes for the manga. He expressed a desire to familiarize the public with the intriguing and stylish aspects of plastering, believing that a widely accessible manga can convey the charms of this profession. He noted that similar to how young football enthusiasts were inspired by the manga Captain Tsubasa, he hopes this work will spark interest in the craft of plastering among many.
