Safe and Reliable Water: Renovation Project at Toyono Water Treatment Plant

Ensuring Safe and Reliable Water for Future Generations

In a significant move towards enhancing water safety in Japan, Water Engineering Inc. has officially been awarded a contract by the Osaka City Waterworks Bureau for the renovation of the Toyono Water Treatment Plant. This contract, which focuses on upgrading the chemical injection equipment for sulfuric acid and caustic soda, is set to run from March 7, 2025, to June 30, 2028.

Background

The project comes at a time when many water facilities in Japan face aging infrastructure challenges, with many treatment plants constructed during the Taisho and early Showa periods needing upgrades. This growing concern has been exacerbated by increasing costs related to disaster preparedness and facility modernization. There is also a pressing need to rethink investment strategies, particularly with declining water demand and a shrinking population. Given these social dynamics, the pursuit of a sustainable and efficient water infrastructure has never been more critical. Water Engineering Inc. aims to tackle these challenges through collaboration and innovation with their clients during this transition phase.

Project Overview

The current project focuses on the renewal of chemical injection equipment that plays a crucial role in water purification. The coagulation sedimentation tank utilized in the treatment process comprises three main components: the mixing tank, floc formation tank, and sedimentation tank. Initially, the coagulant (sulfuric acid) is mixed with raw water in the mixing tank. The mixture is then carefully stirred in the floc formation tank, causing fine impurities to clump together into larger entities known as flocs, which can be easily settled (coagulation). The larger flocs then slowly flow into the sedimentation tank where they settle (sedimentation). To maintain optimal coagulation, the pH level is adjusted by adding the caustic soda when necessary.

Moreover, as the purification process continues, further adjustments ensure the pH levels stabilize around the targeted value of approximately 7.5, thus ensuring treated water remains within acceptable quality standards.
