Understanding Behavioral Issues in Youth: A Unique Educational Approach
In a groundbreaking initiative, ShoPro, a subsidiary of Shogakukan-Shueisha Production Company, has launched an Instagram account entitled ‘Futatsume no Chizu’ or ‘The Second Map.’ This project aims to utilize the knowledge gained from correctional education within collaborative correctional facilities to address the behavioral challenges faced by children. From 2007 onwards, ShoPro has been actively involved in the operation of correctional facilities in cooperation with both public and private sectors, covering various aspects like education, vocational training, and rehabilitation programs across five different locations in Japan.
The Role of Correctional Education
Through its correctional education initiatives, ShoPro has focused on facilitating the reintegration of offenders into society. This effort involves recognizing each individual’s background and challenges, with a strong emphasis on preventing recidivism and building a foundation for social independence. Interestingly, throughout their work, the team has found that many at-risk behaviors stem from difficulties experienced in childhood, often compounded by a lack of understanding and support from those around them. Acknowledging this insight leads to a crucial question: How can these lessons be applied earlier, and can they aid in preventing problematic behaviors before they lead to delinquency?
Launching ‘Futatsume no Chizu’
To address these concerns, ShoPro has initiated ‘Futatsume no Chizu,’ which aims to disseminate the insights and perspectives learned through correctional education to children and their guardians. The Instagram account promotes awareness through entertaining short stories featuring animal characters, tackling various themes:
- - The feelings of children facing life difficulties
- - The internal struggles of parents uncertain about how to support their children
- - Practical tips for engaging without judgment or blame
By simplifying the complex emotional experiences into relatable narratives, the account ensures that followers can easily grasp the underlying messages without the burden of specialized jargon.
Expanding Educational Perspectives
The account does not seek to provide a single correct answer but rather aims to present multiple approaches tailored to the situational needs of children and parents alike. In the realm of correctional education, the core mission is about reconnecting with society—an ethos that resonates widely within the everyday contexts of family life and schooling.
This project emphasizes understanding the underlying causes of behaviors instead of solely focusing on actions themselves. Instead of offering unilateral solutions, it encourages collaborative thinking and emphasizes viewing children not merely as ‘problematic’ but as individuals facing unique challenges.
Bridging the Gap in Education
The insights cultivated through correctional education can serve as valuable educational resources for society as a whole. ‘Futatsume no Chizu’ aims to be a platform for sharing these perspectives, empowering both children and parents to expand their understanding and choices regarding behavioral concerns.
Rather than a rigid mandate of “what must be done,” the account strives to share information that helps families explore diverse strategies and perspectives tailored to their situations—acting as a guiding light when facing confusion or anxiety.
We invite everyone to follow this initiative, as our mission extends towards fostering a more empathetic and supportive approach to youth challenges, leveraging the wisdom of correctional education.
