AI Is Transforming Cybersecurity Roles Rather Than Phasing Them Out, New Study Reveals

AI's Impact on Cybersecurity Jobs

The recently released 2026 Security Budget Benchmark Report by IANS and Artico Search sheds light on the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI) within the cybersecurity landscape. Contrary to the fears of job elimination due to automation, the report reveals that AI is a primary driver for the creation of new roles in cybersecurity.

Key Findings of the Report

Among the prominent findings, 69% of Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) have identified AI as the top focus for new security investments. Additionally, 81% anticipate an increase in demand for security roles enriched by AI skills. This indicates a significant shift in how companies are budgeting and structuring their cybersecurity teams amidst a relatively stagnant overall security budget growth of only 5% for 2026.

Many organizations face a challenging financial landscape, with 45% reporting static budgets and 10% experiencing cuts. As organizations navigate these constraints, the strategic use of AI stands out as a means to maximize the value of limited financial resources.

AI as a focal point for investment

Organizations formally budgeting for AI are increasing their funding more aggressively. Around 70% of those tracking AI as a distinct line item in their budget reported increased spending in this area, compared to only 42% whose AI investments were embedded within general security budgets. Notably, organizations expecting significant increases in their AI security spending — greater than 10% — were found to be more optimistic about future funding opportunities.

Productivity Boost and Workforce Evolution

The findings from IANS illustrate that 91% of CISOs believe AI will enhance team productivity over the next year. However, rather than leading to workforce reduction, AI is seen as a tool that will require existing personnel to adapt and evolve. 69% of CISOs do not foresee any decrease in current security staffing levels; instead, team members are being repositioned to notice threats and provide essential decision-making that AI may not effectively handle in contexts with incomplete information.

Nick Kakolowski, Senior Research Director at IANS, remarked that AI has revolutionized discussions around cybersecurity investments. Organizations are compelled to rethink operational strategies and workforce preparations while ensuring that investments align with overarching business objectives.

Shifting Business Landscape

The demand for cybersecurity investments is increasingly driven by concerns other than significant breaches. A striking 48% of CISOs cited rising business risks as the key motive for budget increments, as opposed to only 3% who pointed to noteworthy breaches as their main justification for increased expenditure. This shift in focus underscores the importance of responsiveness to evolving operational risks.

Future Prospects for Security Budgets

Looking ahead, there appears to be a cautiously optimistic outlook among CISOs regarding budget expansions in 2027. While a modest 45% experienced increased budgets this year, 64% expressed confidence in achieving budget growth next year. This is indicative of a broader anticipation for enhanced funding, positioning cybersecurity teams to leverage AI effectively.

Steve Martano, a Partner at Artico Search, emphasized that while AI is making proactive contributions to security workflows, it has not resulted in widespread layoffs. Rather, it has prompted a reallocation of roles within teams where members have the opportunity to assume new responsibilities that align with AI-driven processes.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the insights from the 2026 Security Budget Benchmark Report emphasize that AI is not phasing out cybersecurity jobs but is instead catalyzing the development of new skills and roles. Organizations that align their AI investments with business needs and focus on workforce development will likely be at the forefront of mitigating risks while driving innovation. As we move toward an AI-enriched future in cybersecurity, the emphasis on building a skilled workforce remains paramount.

For companies looking to navigate this transformative era, the strategic integration of AI into team structures and processes will not only enhance security measures but also create opportunities for growth and adaptation in the workforce.
