Sinopec Honored with Award for Technological Innovation at European ESG Conference
Sinopec Wins Top Award for Technological Innovation
On June 30, 2025, at the 2nd Sino-European Corporate ESG Best Practice Conference held in Stuttgart, Germany, Sinopec, officially known as China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (HKG: 0386), was awarded the prestigious title of "Best Scientific and Technological Innovation Practice". This award acknowledges Sinopec's dedication to advancing technology within the energy and chemical sector.
The conference aimed to highlight exemplary cases of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices in multiple sectors, including environmental protection, corporate management, and technological innovation. Sinopec stood out with its case submission titled "Breakthrough in Depth, Climb to New Heights — Empowering the Energy and Chemical Industry with Technological Innovation."
The conference not only recognized Sinopec's commitment to sustainability but also served as a platform to enhance collaboration and understanding between Chinese and European businesses, thereby promoting bilateral economic and trade relations.
Sinopec’s innovative approach has been recognized by the jury panel as a crucial driver in its pursuit of carbon neutrality, demonstrating how the company has effectively utilized technological advancements to address contemporary challenges in the energy sector. The panel remarked, "Sinopec has harnessed technological innovation as a powerful engine in its journey toward carbon peaking and carbon neutrality. By focusing on strategic areas such as oil and gas exploration, along with the green and low-carbon transformation, the company is vigorously advancing high-end, intelligent, and green development."
One of Sinopec's notable innovations is the Project Deep Earth, which aims to access ultra-deep oil and gas reserves, likened to "Mount Everest underground". This ambitious initiative is designed to unlock previously unreachable resources while reinforcing the company’s commitment to developing clean energy solutions. As part of advancing shale gas development in China, Sinopec's Fuling Shale Gas Field emerged as the first field in the nation with commercial viability, estimated to have reserves in the hundreds of billions of cubic meters.
Moreover, Sinopec is leading efforts in green technology through its initiative to create China’s first megaton CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage) project, along with launching the world’s first 100-kilometer CO₂ transmission pipeline. To further enhance its decarbonization strategy, Sinopec is collaborating with global leaders such as Shell, China Baowu Steel Group, and BASF to study the feasibility of a 10-million-tonne open-source CCUS project aimed at further reducing emissions while enhancing carbon sequestration.
Sinopec’s transformation is fueled by continuous innovation. In 2024, it launched the world’s first intelligent ethylene plant, integrating digital twin technology to optimize operations. The company's innovative spirit is also reflected in its deployment of AI-driven digital employees at over 40 integrated energy stations, enhancing customer service through smart technologies.
Additionally, at the conference, Sinopec introduced the "World Energy Outlook 2060" report, marking its first-ever energy and chemical industry development report released in Europe. This comprehensive outlook is envisioned to provide insights into upcoming trends and developments in the global energy sector, showcasing Sinopec’s strategic foresight in navigating the rapidly evolving landscape of energy and chemicals.
In summary, Sinopec's recent accolade at the Sino-European Corporate ESG Best Practice Conference underscores its role as a pioneer in integrating technological innovation with sustainable practices. As the company forges ahead, its commitment to clean energy solutions and responsible corporate governance continues to set an example for peers in the industry.
