The Lively Azabu-Juban Hosts Unique Upcycled Kimono Art Exhibition
The Lively Azabu-Juban, a lifestyle hotel operated by Global Agents, is set to unveil a captivating art exhibition in collaboration with the kimono upcycling project "ikasu". Running from May 1 to May 31, 2026, this exhibit will feature 53 stunning pieces of art created from antique kimonos, seamlessly blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design.
An Artistic Journey with Ikasu
Leading the initiative is Russian textile artist Lena Okamoto, who has gained significant attention both in Japan and abroad for her innovative work that respects the history and memories embedded in antique kimonos and obi. Through her "ikasu" project, Lena breathes new life into these fabrics, transforming them into contemporary textile creations that honor their past while offering fresh narratives.
The theme of this exhibition, "Light and Color Melting into the City Night," reflects the unique atmosphere of the hotel's second-floor shared lounge, where the art will be displayed. Viewers can expect to see 44 brand new pieces created specifically for this event, alongside unique layers of texture and color that evoke both a sense of serenity and vibrancy. One highlight of the exhibition will be the use of antique paulownia chests as framing materials for some artworks, showcasing the creative reuse of all elements.
An Immersive Art Experience
During the exhibition, the entire lounge will be utilized to create a distinctive viewing environment, offering a chance to experience art in a way that differs from traditional gallery settings. Guests can engage with the art and the space in a manner that invites reflection and interaction, underscoring The Lively Azabu-Juban's commitment to being a venue where people, information, and opportunities converge.
In alignment with this concept, the exhibition will be open to the public, including local residents and those interested in the hotel, breaking the customary exclusivity of the second-floor lounge, usually reserved for hotel guests. Guests are also invited to enjoy a flower art installation that heralds the arrival of spring throughout the hotel.
