Riyadh Conference Revolutionizes Care and Support for Conjoined Twins
The inaugural International Conference on Conjoined Twins took place today in Riyadh, marking a pivotal moment in the world of medical care for conjoined twins. This groundbreaking event saw the gathering of health ministers, leading doctors, scientists, and international health officials, all dedicated to enhancing the diagnosis, treatment, and support systems available for conjoined twins across the globe.
Held under the auspices of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the conference is organized by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief), in collaboration with various ministries including Health, Foreign Affairs, and Education. The first day of this significant two-day event coincided with the inaugural World Conjoined Twins Day, a date recently designated by the United Nations to heighten awareness for conjoined twins' challenges.
In his opening remarks, H.E. Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Rabeeah, Advisor to the Royal Court and Supervisor General of KSrelief, underscored the commitment of the Saudi Conjoined Twins Programme. He expressed gratitude towards the surgical and medical teams, reiterating their steadfast dedication to humanitarian efforts and pledging to use their extensive scientific experience to assist even more conjoined twins in leading healthy and fulfilling lives.
The conference features a diverse agenda that includes a high-level ministerial session, keynote addresses, and medical presentations by eminent experts in the field. Among the notable speakers are Dr. Felice D'Arco, a Pediatric Neuroradiologist from Great Ormond Street Hospital, and Professor Olutoyin Olutoye, Anesthesiologist-In-Chief at Lurie Children's Hospital. With over 500 speakers and participants, this event serves as a significant milestone for conjoined twins' separation and care.
Topics of discussion cover various aspects of conjoined twin care, such as surgical interventions, maternal care, ethical implications, and the need for social inclusion. This first-of-its-kind gathering aims to unite surgeons, healthcare professionals, governmental authorities, and leaders from multinational organizations dedicated to enhancing medical care and social support for vulnerable children.
Since its inception in 1990, the Saudi Conjoined Twins Programme has successfully performed surgeries on 61 pairs of conjoined twins, establishing itself as one of the world's leading programs in this specialized area. The conference is expected to foster knowledge sharing, establish best practices, and ultimately improve the lives of conjoined twins and their families.
