A Stronger, Slimmer Energy Network Through 450 MHz LTE Technology in Brazil

Revolutionizing Brazil's Energy Sector with 450 MHz LTE

Every day, millions of Brazilians carry out their daily activities by pressing a button. They power on their computers, start machinery, and expect uninterrupted electricity service. The underlying infrastructure that supports this phenomenon is increasingly complex.

In the realm of energy supply, Brazil is home to one of the largest and most intricate sectors in the world, serving around 90 million consumers through a network of over 700,000 kilometers. In this fast-paced environment, energy providers like Companhia Energética de Minas Gerais (CEMIG) are embracing digital transformation to meet rising demands.

CEMIG, Brazil's largest integrated electric utility, has its hands full as it caters to over 9 million customers across 774 municipalities in Minas Gerais. With a mission to provide safe and high-quality energy, the company is focused on expanding its network infrastructure to ensure reliability and resilience.

Sandro Bernardes, Project Manager of Networks and Telecommunications at CEMIG, emphasizes that the utility aims to modernize its operations through an ambitious investment plan, which includes doubling the number of substations and enhancing existing facilities. However, as CEMIG's energy infrastructure expands, so too does its telecommunication needs.

Recognizing the importance of an advanced telecommunication system to ensure safe operations, CEMIG sought a strategic partnership with technology leader Huawei. Through a public tender, Huawei presented the most viable solution to meet CEMIG's challenges and requirements regarding energy telecommunications. This partnership is not merely a technological upgrade; it represents a smart allocation of capital to modernize processes and enhance efficiency.

The solution implemented is Huawei's eLTE Private Network, which will enable CEMIG to develop a high-capacity telecommunication network across the entirety of Minas Gerais. Managed centrally from CEMIG's control centers, this initiative will improve connectivity and optimize operations in the growing energy landscape.

One key aspect of the partnership is the introduction of private LTE networks, which are quickly becoming a standard in the energy sector. After extensive research and studies, CEMIG chose to adopt the 450 MHz frequency band as per the specifications of the 3GPP standard. This frequency provides a comprehensive end-to-end ecosystem that enables wide coverage, massive connectivity, and high reliability, making it an ideal choice for digital transformation in energy supply.

As CEMIG embarks on this journey with Huawei's expertise, they will effectively address current and future demands for energy reliability and quality. This project illustrates how collaborative ventures between utility providers and technology firms can pave the way for a more intelligent and efficient energy landscape.

With Huawei's involvement in implementing this technology, CEMIG is positioned to lead the charge in transforming Brazil’s energy infrastructure. This development not only enhances operational reliability but also sets a benchmark for similar initiatives in the energy sector worldwide.
