About the Tokyo Universal Philharmonic Orchestra
Founded in
1973 in Ota Ward, the Tokyo Universal Philharmonic Orchestra, formerly known as the Japan New Symphony Orchestra, was created with the aim of promoting artistic culture among the youth. In
1977, it rebranded as the Tokyo Universal Philharmonic Orchestra (abbreviated as
Uniphil) and is celebrating its
52nd anniversary this year. Over the years, the orchestra has held more than
100 self-produced concerts, including regular performances, New Year's concerts, and family-friendly concerts since
2012.
Under the leadership of their permanent conductor,
Mr. Katsu Matsuoka, Uniphil has gained recognition for being an orchestra with a “heartfelt song.” The ensemble not only collaborates with choral groups but also produces concerts with engaging themes to make opera and ballet more accessible to its audience.
In 2024, Uniphil will take part in the Ota City Aprico Opera 2024, performing Johann Strauss’s operetta
Die Fledermaus, which will showcase their warm sound and excellent ensemble skills, winning the admiration of attendees.
Additionally, the orchestra continues its commitment to music education for youth. With the theme “
Messengers from the Future,” they actively organize music appreciation sessions that reach over
50,000 students from kindergarten to high school annually, collaborating with education boards and music research committees across Japan.
