Introducing the Second SSBJ Workshop by SLC
The Sustainability Leadership Community (SLC) in Japan, which serves as a major forum for sustainability leaders, held its second SSBJ workshop on August 20, 2025. As a community dedicated to enhancing collective knowledge and practices in sustainability, SLC has been actively bringing together professionals from various sectors to discuss and share valuable insights.
The SLC, boasting a membership of 795 individuals from 514 companies (as of June 2025), operates under the concept of 'Together Towards Sustainability'. It aims to support companies and individuals committed to sustainability, fostering a platform for free registration and participation. The community is operated by Booost Inc., a company based in Shinagawa, Tokyo, recognized for its innovative sustainability ERP solutions. Their regular events, including keynote speeches and networking opportunities, provide a rich environment for exchanging ideas, sharing challenges, and learning from best practices regarding sustainability management.
Focus of the Second SSBJ Workshop
This workshop was particularly focused on the practical aspects of complying with the SSBJ standards, which were published in March 2025. Participants included professionals from sustainability, investor relations, and strategic planning departments of prime listed companies with market capitalizations exceeding ¥500 billion. Scheduled to run from July 2025 to January 2026, this workshop series includes a total of seven sessions aimed at increasing the adaptability of companies to the newly defined standards.
During the second workshop, discussions revolved around two main themes: understanding the timeline for mandatory disclosures and identifying the materiality required under the SSBJ guidelines. Participants engaged in discussions based on their respective company sizes and reported their progress in preparing for compliance with the SSBJ standards. The interaction among attendees resulted in valuable exchanges of ideas, particularly regarding collaboration with management and finance teams to quantify financial impacts.
Many participants expressed positive feedback, highlighting deepened understanding of their company's challenges and expressing interest in exploring solutions. There was an acknowledgment of the workshop as a source of valuable insights and discussions facilitating their sustainability initiatives.
Future Directions for SLC Workshops
Looking ahead, the SLC plans to enrich the quality and quantity of discussions by including more advanced case studies and promoting the active participation of sustainability professionals. Addressing the 2026 Sustainability Challenges
As companies prepare for mandatory disclosures of sustainability-related financial information, many are struggling with delays and a lack of awareness regarding the potential risks to their corporate values. This situation is referred to as the 'Sustainability 2026 Problem'. To combat these challenges and enhance the global presence of Japanese companies through effective sustainability transformation, Booost Inc. launched the 'Japan as a Leading Country in SX' project in November 2024.
This initiative aims to deliver events and support measures tailor-made for both on-ground practitioners and executive leadership. Through these efforts, Booost aims to guide companies in overcoming the Sustainability 2026 challenges and improving their corporate values.
