Huawei and SchneiTec Launch First TÜV SÜD-Certified Energy Storage Project in Cambodia

Huawei and SchneiTec Commission Cambodia's First TÜV SÜD-Certified Energy Storage Project

In a notable step towards a sustainable energy future, Huawei Digital Power has partnered with SchneiTec to successfully launch Cambodia's inaugural TÜV SÜD-certified grid-forming energy storage project. This project not only signifies a major milestone for Cambodia but also marks a significant achievement in the realm of renewable energy solutions. Known for being a leading energy solutions provider in the region, SchneiTec previously developed the largest solar power plant in Cambodia, setting a precedent for pioneering initiatives in this sector.

Project Details

The recently completed energy storage project boasts a capacity of 12 MWh, including a specially designed 2 MWh testing area aimed at validating Huawei's Smart Array-based Grid-Forming ESS technology. This system is specifically engineered to facilitate the seamless integration of intermittent renewable energy sources, showcasing exceptional abilities to stabilize the grid in off-grid and weak grid scenarios. With its TÜV SÜD certification, this project stands as the first implementation of grid-forming ESS in Cambodia, laying a robust foundation for future capacity expansions and large-scale energy infrastructure developments.

Rigorous Testing and Certification

The project was jointly tested by TÜV SÜD, SchneiTec, and Huawei Digital Power. TÜV SÜD, which is globally recognized for its stringent standards in energy technology testing and certification, successfully validated key technical features of Huawei's Smart Array-based Grid-Forming ESS. These features include inertia response, voltage ride-through capabilities, frequency support, and overload performance.

Key Testing Highlights

1. Grid-Forming Inertia: The inertia of Huawei's grid-forming technology achieved a time constant range (Tj) of 3-20 seconds, exceeding the standard requirement of 3-12 seconds. This enhances grid stability and showcases remarkable response performance.
2. Voltage Ride-Through: The system effectively manages voltage fluctuations, maintaining grid stability during short-term voltage drops and surges. It continued to operate across an extensive voltage range, from 95% to 130% of the nominal grid voltage.
3. Overload and Frequency Support: The grid-forming ESS operates reliably under short-term overload conditions of up to 300%, effectively damping low-frequency oscillations in a range of 0.2Hz - 5Hz.
4. Black Start Capability: The technology enables fast black start capabilities under load, facilitating efficient recovery of the grid following a complete blackout.

This independent validation of Huawei's grid-forming ESS technology signifies the project's compliance with international standards including IEC, National Standards of China, UK Grid Code, and VDE standards from Germany. The attainment of TÜV SÜD certification demonstrates that Huawei's grid-forming ESS technology meets globally recognized criteria for energy management and grid stability.

Significance for Renewable Energy in Cambodia

This initiative not only marks a critical achievement in Huawei Digital Power's technological development journey but also symbolizes a turning point in the evolution of innovation within the energy sector. The successful collaboration between Huawei Digital Power and SchneiTec reflects a significant step in Cambodia's transition toward renewable energy solutions. As the nation progresses on its renewable energy roadmap, Huawei Digital Power is dedicated to promoting innovation by continuing to deliver stable, scalable, and reliable solutions to meet the growing sustainable electricity demand and support advancements in energy infrastructure.
