Army & Air Force Exchange Service Honors Vietnam Veterans with Closing Ceremonies

Honoring Vietnam War Heroes: A Tribute by the Army & Air Force Exchange Service

On March 29, 2025, the Army & Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) will host the final pinning ceremonies to honor Vietnam War veterans as part of the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War Commemoration. This initiative has been a heartfelt effort to recognize the service and sacrifice of those who served during this turbulent period in history.

Established by Congress and supported by the Secretary of Defense, the commemorative partnership launched in 2012 has been a testament to the nation’s gratitude towards Vietnam veterans and their families. Those who served on active duty from November 1, 1955, to May 15, 1975, are invited to receive a commemorative lapel pin, inscribed "A Grateful Nation Thanks and Honors You." This gesture symbolizes the deep appreciation that the country holds for these brave individuals who dedicated their lives to service.

The ceremony, scheduled to take place in various PX (Post Exchange) and BX (Base Exchange) locations worldwide, marks an emotional and significant moment, especially as ceremonies will coincide with National Vietnam Veterans Day. Tom Shull, the Director and CEO of the Exchange, who is also a Vietnam-era Army veteran, expressed his honor in celebrating the selfless service of these veterans. He stated, "It is a privilege to join a thankful nation as we show our deepest appreciation and support for these heroes."

Ceremonies will be held in-conjunction with local communities to ensure that as many veterans as possible are recognized. Those interested in participating can find information about nearby events through the Exchange’s community hub or their local social media pages. Additionally, veterans without regular access to military installations are encouraged to reach out to their local Exchange for details on how they can attend the ceremonies.

Since becoming a commemorative partner in 2013, AAFES has organized over 400 events to honor and celebrate Vietnam veterans and pay tribute to their valor and sacrifices. Through these communal activities, the Exchange aims to foster a spirit of unity and remembrance within military families and the larger community.

In recognition of its longstanding mission, AAFES has been serving military communities since 1895, providing essential services and products at exclusive military pricing. As the 52nd largest retailer in the United States, AAFES is dedicated to improving quality of life for service members, contributing over $15 billion in support of military morale, welfare, and recreation programs over the past decade.

This commemorative event stands not only as a final tribute to Vietnam veterans but also as a reminder of the sacrifices made by all service members. As part of the commemoration, the Exchange invites the public to become engaged and recognize the significance of the Vietnam War era in shaping today's military landscape. Through honoring their past, the nation fortifies its commitment to support and honor the heroes of yesteryear.
