Tech Community Comes Together to Support Wildfire Survivors
On March 9, 2025, from 2 to 5 p.m., an impactful initiative will take place at the Jackie Robinson Community Center in Pasadena, California, aimed at assisting over 400 residents affected by devastating wildfires. This program, driven by the efforts of Human-I-T—a nonprofit organization focused on reducing e-waste and bridging the digital gap—will provide free laptops and internet access to help those affected regain connectivity and essential resources for their recovery.
The initiative, titled Tech Leaders Helping with Tech, assembles a coalition of technology firms and local organizations, including the City of Pasadena and Laserfiche, a frontrunner in document management software. Phil Leclair, Pasadena’s Chief Information Officer, emphasized the program’s importance, stating, "Our goal is to provide laptops and hotspots to our Pasadena and Altadena community members affected by the wildfires. We appreciate IT leaders and organizations who have stepped in to make a difference.”
The urgency of this initiative stems from the plight of many evacuees who left their homes with nothing but their mobile phones. These individuals often struggle with navigating online forms for assistance, seeking long-term housing, and accessing essential services that have increasingly migrated to digital platforms. Numerous organizations—including East West Bank, Cathay Bank, The Beachbody Company, and Metrolink—have generously donated devices and resources. Notably, Lenovo has stepped up with laptop donations, emphasising its commitment to helping communities during crises. Leslie Harlien, Lenovo's Vice President for the U.S. Public Sector, stated, "Our laptop donation to the people of the Los Angeles region will help families and residents stay connected. Technology plays a critical role in recovery as more services, schooling, and our daily lives move online.”
Beyond just devices, this collective effort aims to enhance the overall welfare of the affected individuals. This includes provisions from numerous partners like T-Mobile, which is distributing hotspots through Project 10Million, ensuring broader access to the internet. Thomas Phelps, Chief Information Officer at Laserfiche, expressed his gratitude, stating, “The outpouring of support has been incredibly heartwarming.”
Additionally, organizations committed to digital equity, such as Delete the Divide and the Los Angeles Digital Equity Action League (LA DEAL), are playing vital roles in this initiative.
