Celebrating Women in Construction Week 2025
From March 2 to 8, 2025, 84 Lumber proudly honors Women in Construction (WIC) Week, emphasizing the significant role women play in the construction industry. As a leading force in the sector, the company is dedicated to empowering women, providing them with the resources and support needed to excel in their careers.
This year, 84 Lumber spotlights three exceptional women who have made their mark in various capacities within the construction sphere: Wendy Odom, Jessica Ryan, and Malori Raison. Their narratives exemplify the diverse roles women can occupy in this traditionally male-dominated field and highlight both the struggles and triumphs they encounter along the way.
Wendy Odom: A Journey of Growth
Wendy Odom serves as a Sales Coordinator at 84 Lumber in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. With over three decades of experience in the construction realm—twenty-two of which were spent with 84 Lumber—Wendy has demonstrated remarkable resilience and adaptability.
She initially entered the industry as a single mother seeking to provide for her family. Wendy has since embraced the opportunities afforded to her, dedicating herself to learning and advancing in her career. She believes that women possess unique abilities that benefit the industry, such as superior problem-solving and multitasking skills. “This industry builds integrity, strength, and confidence,” she notes, urging others to approach the sector with eagerness to learn and grow.
Her journey has also been about mentorship, as she emphasizes the importance of supporting fellow women in the industry. “Together we built an awesome place to work,” she reflects on fostering a collaborative atmosphere with other women at her location.
Jessica Ryan: Breaking Barriers
Jessica Ryan, the owner of Thermally Yours Inc. in Clifton Park, New York, began her construction career as a teenager learning the trade. Now, with twenty-five years in the field—specializing in insulation for the last eleven—she takes pride in leading her company and crew.
“My crew makes me so proud every day,” Jessica explains, noting the strong, capable team she has assembled. However, she also highlights the biases that persist in the industry, stating, “I had to work extra hard to prove my skills and ability.” Jessica advocates for knowledge as critical in overcoming stereotypes, encouraging women to pursue education and training in their trades. She urges newcomers to be assertive and ready to face challenges, promising that substantial rewards await those who endure.
Malori Raison: Navigating Success
Malori Raison, Customer Service Manager at 84 Lumber’s Franklin Components in Indiana, took a pathway into the construction sector with little prior knowledge. Starting in an administrative role, her curiosity and commitment facilitated her rise within the organization.
Having contributed to its establishment, Malori is now responsible for maintaining operational efficiency and enhancing customer relations. She emphasizes the critical nature of her role goes beyond traditional customer service, involving collaboration across facilities to ensure quality delivery at every level.
“Construction is an exciting career, with new challenges every day,” she states, urging more women to consider joining the field. She believes breaking down outdated notions about women's capabilities in construction is crucial for fostering inclusive growth.
Empowering Women for a Stronger Future
The construction industry faces challenges, notably a growing workforce deficit, which makes the inclusion of more women essential. 84 Lumber actively pursues strategies to attract female talent through mentorship programs and skill development offerings, empowering them to contribute to the sector’s future.
Amy Smiley, vice president of marketing at 84 Lumber, encapsulated the company's mission: “Women bring incredible value to the construction industry. By acknowledging their stories, we hope to inspire more women to view this dynamic field as a viable career path.” To learn more about 84 Lumber's initiatives, visit their website at
