Located within a 5-acre site in an industrial park in Innisfail, Alberta, Deep Sky Alpha's swift journey from groundbreaking to operational status in merely 12 months showcases the potential for rapid deployment of innovative climate infrastructure. The facility incorporates multiple Direct Air Capture (DAC) technologies, allowing for real-time experimentation and optimization under uniform conditions. This will significantly enhance the industry's ability to achieve cost-effective and scalable carbon removal solutions.

Alex Petre, the CEO of Deep Sky, emphasized the significance of this milestone, stating, "This is a defining moment, not just for Deep Sky, but for the global carbon removal industry. In just one year, we went from breaking ground to pulling carbon from the sky and locking it underground for good." This statement encapsulates the rapid advancements being made in the sustainability sector, where companies are increasingly seeking reliable carbon removal solutions to offset their emissions.

CO2 Sequestration: A New Era for Carbon Management



Deep Sky Alpha is historic not only for its operational capacity but also for being the first DAC facility in North America to sequester CO₂ underground. The captured CO₂ will be stowed away in deep geological formations known as saline aquifers, which are plentiful in Alberta. This method represents a vital strategy for managing hard-to-abate emissions, aligning with broader net-zero commitments across various industries.

Rebecca Schulz, Alberta's Minister of Environment and Protected Areas, celebrated this achievement, stating, "Alberta continues to lead the way in attracting world-class innovation, and this is an example of another company that has chosen Alberta because of our skilled workforce and our commitment to responsible development." This endorsement highlights the role of Alberta in fostering an environment conducive to sustainable industry practices.

Advanced Technology and Future Expansion



The CO₂ captured at Deep Sky Alpha originates from several first-rate DAC units sourced globally, demonstrating the project's international collaboration. Currently, units from the UK-based Airhive and Mission Zero Technologies, along with Quebec's Skyrenu, are operational, with plans to add even more units in the fall, totaling up to 10 in capacity.

Moreover, Deep Sky Alpha is strategically placed to take advantage of renewable energy sources and is entirely powered by solar energy. With an impressive annual capture capacity of 3,000 tonnes of CO₂, the project has already generated over 110 jobs during construction and expects to provide around 15 full-time positions moving forward.

To ensure transparency and accountability, the monitoring of Alpha's carbon capture and sequestration will be conducted using proprietary software, with regular updates shared on Deep Sky's website.

A Global Initiative Toward Carbon Removal



Deep Sky Alpha is just the first of a series of large-scale carbon removal initiatives being spearheaded by Deep Sky, with additional projects already in progress across Alberta, Quebec, and beyond. The company recently secured a $40 million grant from Breakthrough Energy Catalyst and entered into carbon removal credit purchase agreements with major corporations, including Microsoft and the Royal Bank of Canada.
