Join the Exciting Volunteer Opportunity for Dementia Supporters in Kawasaki

On April 22, 2023, from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM, Palsystem Kanagawa will host a volunteer event in Kawasaki City aimed at creating mascots that symbolize dementia supporters. This initiative will be held at the Aso Center, located in Akasaka District in Kawasaki, and all community members are warmly invited to participate. The mascots, known as 'Donkey Captain,' will serve as handmade symbols to support individuals undergoing dementia training programs.

The 'Donkey Captain' is not just any mascot; it represents a caravan that promotes creating a community where individuals affected by dementia can live safely and comfortably. This mascot embodies the spirit of moving forward steadily, step by step, without rushing. The initiative falls under the auspices of the National Caravan-Mate Council, which aims to train instructors for dementia supporter programs in collaboration with municipalities and businesses nationwide.

Volunteers will craft the 'Donkey Captain,' which will be given to those attending dementia supporter training courses. The mascots encourage supporters to visibly demonstrate their commitment to the cause during outings, offering comfort to those who need it in their community.

Comfortable Participation with Community Spirit

All materials and tools necessary for crafting the mascots will be provided at the Aso Center, allowing participants to easily drop in whenever it suits them. Volunteers can freely join the event, cutting out felt, attaching eyes and noses with adhesive, adding stuffing, and sewing the pieces together. Engaging in this hands-on activity fosters a sense of community among participants and contributes to building supportive environments for all involved.

The completed 'Donkey Captain' mascots will be presented on May 20 at the Miyamae Center during the dementia supporter training course. The Aso Center will continue to call for volunteers for mascot creation on the fourth Wednesday of each month, collaborating with dementia support organizations such as Orenji Asao and the Chiyogaoka Donkey Club. A training course for dementia supporters is also scheduled for July 9.
