Marui Group Unveils 'SUKI': A Collaborative Craft Project with Kurashiki Artisans

Marui Group Launches Original 'SUKI' Products with Kurashiki Artisans

Marui Group, headquartered in Nakano, Tokyo, has embarked on an exciting new venture called 'SUKI'. This initiative aims to spotlight Japan's unique culture through collaborations with skilled artisans, showcasing their work to a global audience. To celebrate this launch, Marui Group has partnered with artisans from Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture, resulting in a collection of one-of-a-kind products that embody traditional craftsmanship.

Launch Event at SOIL Nihonbashi

On June 23, 2026, Marui Group hosted a launch event for 'SUKI' at the living space 'slo' within SOIL Nihonbashi. Attendees experienced an immersive showcase of original products alongside engaging discussions featuring the artisans themselves. This occasion served not only as a product reveal but also as a celebration of Kurashiki's rich history, culture, and its artisans’ dedication to craftsmanship.

The event was designed to highlight the stories behind each product, weaving in the historical context, the cultural backdrop, and the artisan's aspirations. This approach encourages visitors to appreciate the emotional and cultural craftsmanship that goes into each item.

Artisans at Work

The products featured in this collection are the result of meticulous handiwork by Kurashiki artisans such as Eiji Kotani and Takaki Sunami. Examples include the stunning red glass vase named 'SUI (吹)', shaped entirely by Kotani's breath, and Sunami's intricate wall art 'YORU (撚)', crafted from the robust igusa material traditionally used in tatami mats. Every piece tells a story and possesses a level of craftsmanship that transcends time, igniting a sense of nostalgia and appreciation for traditional Japanese artistry.

Product Exhibition at SOIL Nihonbashi Hotel

From June 24, 2026, the original SUKI products are on display at the SOIL Nihonbashi Hotel. Guests will have the opportunity to experience the products within a living environment, allowing them to appreciate their functionality and aesthetic firsthand. This display is available to the public until July 23, 2026, and items on display are available for purchase, allowing attendees to take a piece of Japan's craftsmanship home with them.

Future Vision for 'SUKI'

Looking ahead, Marui Group envisions 'SUKI' as a conduit for promoting traditional Japanese crafts and the culture that underpins them. The project's mission is to create a sustainable cycle by ensuring the stories and values associated with these crafts are communicated effectively. This initiative is not just about products; it’s about building a community that supports artisans, fostering the continuation of their craft, and celebrating the unique cultural heritage of Japan.

About SOIL Nihonbashi

The SOIL Nihonbashi Hotel, opening in September 2025, features 14 rooms, designed by Takeda Kiyoshi Architectural Office with a concept of 'back alley gardening', creating lush spaces including a rooftop garden. It offers an immersive stay, blending comfort with local experiences through partnerships with nearby wine shops and bakeries.

Collaborative Space 'slo'

The 'slo' area within SOIL Nihonbashi has been recently renovated as a community living space where individuals can work, enjoy meals, or simply read quietly. The location will also host events, fostering connections among visitors and the local culture.

Marui Group continues to emphasize its commitment to creating an economy driven by love for crafts and culture, as evidenced through SUKI. For more information about the initiative, visit the SUKI Official Website or their Instagram page for updates.
