Unveiling the World of Semiconductors: Achilles at the Forefront
The term “semiconductor” is becoming increasingly prevalent in global news, yet most people still struggle to understand how semiconductors are utilized in their daily lives. In this article, we explore the critical role of semiconductors in contemporary society through the lens of Achilles, a company that has been instrumental in supporting this essential technology.
What If Semiconductors Disappeared Overnight?
Imagine a world where semiconductors ceased to exist. The initial impact would be felt most acutely in critical infrastructures. Systems controlling electricity, gas, and water rely on electronic components that are fundamentally reliant on semiconductors. Without them, vehicles would be rendered inoperable, traffic lights would fail, and public transportation would grind to a halt. Our smartphones, computers, and corporate systems would falter, leading to a significant disruption in economic activities. Even healthcare devices would stop functioning, putting lives at risk. Thus, our modern way of life fundamentally hinges on the invisible yet indispensable foundation of semiconductors.
Shifting Dynamics in the Semiconductor Market
Since the advent of generative AI, the demand for high-performance semiconductors has skyrocketed. Be it AI chatbots, real-time translation, or autonomous vehicles, the dependence on semiconductors continues to grow across various sectors.
Semiconductors as a National Strategy
With the rising global demand, the Japanese government has announced an initiative to invest over 10 trillion yen in AI and semiconductor support from 2024 to 2030. The semiconductor market is valued at an astounding $326 billion (approximately 49 trillion yen) as of 2024, marking about 40% of Japan’s national budget. This highlights the semiconductor industry as a vital national strategy, receiving comprehensive support from the government.
Beyond Manufacturers: The Broad Ecosystem of Semiconductors
Often, semiconductor manufacturers are highlighted in the news, yet the industry extends far beyond them. The semiconductor ecosystem is as expansive and intricate as the automotive industry, comprising numerous companies specializing in materials, equipment, logistics, and software. Achilles is proud to be part of this process, providing essential technologies that support various aspects of the semiconductor industry. For over three decades, we have firmly believed in our role: without our products, semiconductor manufacturers cannot deliver their goods to the market.
Innovations in Wafer Transport Systems
At the heart of the semiconductor industry is the silicon wafer. Achilles specializes in transporting these wafers safely to factories worldwide, ensuring they remain unscathed throughout the manufacturing process. Our adept personnel shared insights into Achilles’ semiconductor-related endeavors and future aspirations.
Understanding Wafers
A wafer is a thin, circular silicon plate on which semiconductor circuits are etched. The wafer’s fragility exceeds common expectations; mere exposure to dust or static electricity can render the circuits defective. An upscale 12-inch wafer can have a travel cost equivalent to a luxury car. To transport these precious materials safely, Achilles developed the “Wafer Transport System (Protos Series).”
Why Achilles is Chosen Worldwide
To transport wafers securely, three components are essential: the “case” to hold the wafer, “cushioning material” to absorb shock, and “spacers” to protect the wafer's surface. Achilles is unique in that we can provide all these components under our brand, enhancing traceability and quality control. This reliability has garnered trust from semiconductor manufacturers worldwide.
From Flooring Technology to Semiconductors
Achilles’ entry into the semiconductor market stemmed from long-standing expertise in processing fibers and the incorporation of conductivity features into materials. Our foundational technology centered around heating fabric by weaving carbon into it and applying electricity. Initially used in household heating and agricultural applications, this conductive technology evolved into product offerings for electrostatic countermeasures, focusing on the semiconductor industry.
In 1994, we expanded into the pre-processing field, anticipating the need for safer transport as wafer diameters increased. We developed specialized materials using our polymer composites, positioning us as a leader in the domestic market while enhancing our global footprint.
Exceptionally Improving Product Quality
Recognizing the need for improvement is crucial. Feedback from a major semiconductor manufacturer about contamination on wafers prompted a rapid quality enhancement project. By reformulating the resin blends for our spacers, we achieved a tenfold reduction in contamination levels in just three months—an impressive feat that took competitors years to accomplish. Our revised spacers are now under comprehensive changeover processes across the board.
Continuous Challenge and Sustainability
Achilles does not stop here. As a response to the high concentration of semiconductor post-processing manufacturers in Taiwan, we established a local subsidiary to recycle used transport cases, which can be reused up to 12 times. Each month, approximately 10,000 cases contribute to a significant reduction in plastic waste, showcasing our commitment to sustainability in the semiconductor industry.
Looking Ahead: AI and Future Technologies
As AI evolves, the requirement for contactless solutions for wafer transport becomes more pressing. Our development of “Contactless Ring Spacers,” which only touch the wafer’s edge without contacting the sensitive circuitry, is already underway, with 8-inch versions available and 12-inch versions in development.
Additionally, we are designing transport cases for square wafers made from glass substrates, looking to future technological advancements. The unwavering commitment to continuous evolution is why Achilles products remain a preferred choice globally.
Conclusion
Our advancements in the semiconductor sector demonstrate Achilles’ resilience and adaptability, ensuring we are at the forefront of technology evolution. By continually aligning our innovations with the demands of this dynamic industry, we contribute significantly to the progression of modern society.
