Beppu City's New Art Installations in ALTERNATIVE-STATE

The Mixed Bathing World Executive Committee, located in Beppu City, Oita Prefecture, Japan, has recently unveiled two exciting new art pieces as part of their ongoing project known as "ALTERNATIVE-STATE." This initiative, which began in 2022, aims to bolster the city’s reputation as a hot spring resort while enriching its artistic landscape.

Beppu is renowned worldwide for its spectacular hot springs, a unique cultural aspect cherished by locals and tourists alike. The town is characterized by the enchanting sight of steam rising from the earth, creating a mystical atmosphere. The ALTERNATIVE-STATE Project

The ALTERNATIVE-STATE project was conceptualized to enhance the city's brand loyalty through artistic expression. By installing artworks throughout the city, the initiative invites artists from around the globe to participate in enriching Beppu's cultural tapestry. Over a four-year timeline, the project aims to install a total of eight art pieces, representing a blend of established talents and emerging voices in the art community.

The newly added artworks include:

1. Bluebird Sign
This installation features a playful exploration of the Beppu downtown area as it invites visitors to engage in a treasure hunt for various artworks scattered around the city. Each piece tells a story derived from interviews with local residents, offering a unique narrative that weaves into the colorful fabric of everyday life. As guests search for the elusive bluebird—an emblem of hope and happiness—they’re encouraged to immerse themselves in Beppu's ambiance and discover its hidden gems.

2. Distorted "JIKU" #023D-1 / BEPPU
A dramatic piece that unveils a single ray of light illuminating the sky above the main street, this artwork serves to highlight the geographical and historical significance of the area, particularly after sunset. It encapsulates the essence of Beppu, reminding onlookers of the deeper connections between the land, its stories, and its tranquil hot springs.
