Innovative Local Power Supply Course Set to Launch in Japan in 2025

The 'Regional Power Supply Course 2025' is set to commence in July 2025, organized by the General Incorporated Association Local Good Creation Support Organization, based in Minato-ku, Tokyo. This initiative aims to bring together pioneering leaders in local renewable energy to share invaluable insights and experiences in establishing and managing local power suppliers.

Since the full liberalization of electricity retail in 2016, the landscape for regional power suppliers has vastly transformed, with over 100 companies emerging, especially those involving local governments. These companies not only sell electricity but also engage in renewable energy projects tailored to community needs, effectively solving local challenges and enhancing regional value.

The course seeks to impart essential knowledge, including both successes and failures faced during the establishment and operation of local power projects. Participants will have the unique opportunity to exchange thoughts and ideas with experienced operators while also receiving individualized advice to assist in their unique circumstances. This structured support aims to facilitate a ‘Domino Effect of Local Decarbonization Talent,’ shifting knowledge and passion from one local entity to another.

The course will feature a mix of online sessions and on-site training, conducted through five online lectures and three in-person workshops, designed specifically for individuals involved in local energy initiatives.

Course Structure:

1. Online Lectures:
- Session 1: Basics of Regional Power Suppliers – understanding the current state and practical tasks involved.
- Session 2: Building Decarbonization Frameworks – strategies for collaboration between public and private sectors, managing risks, internalizing know-how, and operational designs for renewable energy supply models.
- Session 3: Creating Community-Centric Power Suppliers – guidance on sourcing electricity, risk management, and governance structures.
- Session 4: Integrating Renewable Energy Development with Electricity Retail – insights into developing solar, small hydro, and biomass projects, exploring synergies, and governmental support systems.
- Session 5: Addressing Local Issues – methods for designing and operating projects that solve community problems including transportation challenges in rural areas and promoting electric vehicle adoption.

2. On-Site Trainings:
Participants will visit locations such as Shonan Electric (Kanagawa), Kagura Electric (Shimane), and Iida City Development Power (Nagano) to witness real-world operations and engage with local challenges and successes. Networking opportunities will be provided at all on-site workshops, fostering collaboration among attendees.

3. Individual Consultations:
Additional individual consultations will be available for participants to discuss their projects and inquire about specific challenges in renewable energy initiatives or decarbonization plans. These sessions will include options for in-person visits to local entities to deepen engagement (availability limited).

Registration Information:

Interested parties can register for the course through the Local Good organization’s website. Attendance is free of charge, although participants will need to cover their own travel expenses to training sites. Note that registration will close once the maximum capacity is reached. Collaborative applications with other departments or stakeholders are encouraged to enhance project development efforts.
