LiDAR technology employs laser sensors that are mounted on helicopters, allowing for aerial surveys of transmission rights-of-way. As the helicopter flies over the designated areas, it emits rapid laser pulses aimed at the ground and surrounding vegetation. When these pulses bounce back to the sensors, they generate precise distance measurements, culminating in a detailed, three-dimensional representation of the terrain, including power lines and nearby flora. FirstEnergy has previously employed LiDAR in vegetation inspections since 2016, during which it has surveyed over 100,000 miles of transmission lines. This technology has significantly decreased the need for manual inspections by as much as 50%, fostering better collaboration between various departments including engineering and maintenance.

A Comprehensive Approach to Maintenance



Following LiDAR's detailed assessments, FirstEnergy plans to carry out requisite tree trimming and maintenance on transmission line corridors. Areas that require immediate attention are flagged for maintenance, further enhancing the reliability of service for over six million customers from northwest Ohio to New Jersey. Helicopters will also be outfitted with aerial saws to tackle vegetation in difficult-to-reach locations, streamlining maintenance efforts even further.
