On August 20, AI Data Corporation, based in Minato, Tokyo, hosted a pivotal event titled "AI Agent × AX Forum - Drug Discovery and Biotech." The forum aimed to delve into the potential applications of AI in these sectors, recognized by the government as part of its vital strategic fields. Session 1: Evolution of the Japanese Pharma and Biotech Industry in the AI Era
Led by Takanori Sasaki, President of AI Data Group, this session underscored the idea of treating AI not simply as a tool, but as a pivotal force for industrial transformation akin to a revolution. Sasaki emphasized the necessity for pharmaceutical and biotech enterprises to evolve into what he termed "AI Native Enterprises," where data found in disparate areas such as research, intellectual property, regulatory affairs, quality control, manufacturing, and management can be effectively integrated and utilized. This integration would enable enterprises to function as singular intelligent entities, capable of making informed business decisions and improving competitiveness. The "AI Data Platform" was advocated as a foundational tool for this shift, focusing on three types of corporate intelligence: Strategic, Trust, and Organizational.

Session 2: Current Dynamics of the Pharma Industry and Future Management in the AI Age
Taka Horii, founder and CEO of Taka Horii & Co., previously the President of AstraZeneca Japan, discussed how global pharmaceutical markets are expanding while Japan's prominence is declining. He advocated for the transformation of the drug discovery and biotech sector into a robust growth industry amid issues like an aging population and emerging therapies. Horii pointed out the critical need for management to choose limited resources, connect dispersed knowledge, and safeguard patient safety and trust. He posited that while AI could enhance operational efficiencies, the ethical duties of ensuring safety and responsibility should remain human-led. Daisuke Shida, CTO of AI Data Corporation, emphasized the importance of moving AI utilization beyond task-specific efficiencies to establishing a holistic AI Native Enterprise. He introduced the AI Data Platform as necessary for integrating research, intellectual property, regulatory, and market data. A hypothetical pharmaceutical company's demonstration showcased how AIs in various departments could jointly work towards overall optimization, housed under a model termed "Human-in-the-Loop," reinforcing that the final decisions should always involve human expertise.

Kuni Hiroshi Nishimura, president of Tenkuu Inc., focused on how AI facilitates the interpretation of extensive genomic data for personalized treatment protocols. He highlighted the medical community's burden due to the extensive information required for accurate assessments and emphasized AI's role as a supportive navigational tool to streamline this process while maintaining the necessity for human judgement.

Session 5: Redefining Intellectual Property Strategy in Pharma-Biotech
Hiroshi Morita, a partner at Morita & Otani Patent Attorneys, elaborated on how AI would elevate IP strategies from individual patent applications to a holistic "Grand Design" that encompasses business strategies. Utilizing case studies, he detailed how strategically placing rights at market access points could protect business competitiveness.

Session 6: Legal Framework for Data, AI, and Biotech
Lawyers Naoya Yoshizawa and Shuhei Suzuki from GRiT Partners discussed how AI application across research stages is transforming the R&D process. They emphasized the need to address the economic security risks arising from AI output, advocating for a cohesive strategy from the onset of research development through regulatory understanding and information management.

Session 7: Implementing Vertical AI through Data Infrastructure
Tomoyuki Hirai, president of LegalTech Inc., conveyed that the development of Vertical AI requires more than AI model effectiveness; it necessitates a holistic design around proprietary data, workflows, and governance to support decision-making in distinct operational sectors.

Session 8: The Concept of 'Decarbonization' vs. 'Deoxygenation'
Satoshi Kinno, CEO of BIRD INITIATIVE, introduced the notion of self-driving labs that leverage AI to orchestrate the research process autonomously. By eliminating environmental constraints, the potential for groundbreaking research in new areas was emphasized.
