The Solo Exhibition: "Home Pleasure" by Manbo Key
A Cultural Showcase
The vibrant world of art collides with queer culture in the new solo exhibition, "Home Pleasure" by Taiwanese artist Manbo Key, taking place at the PARCO MUSEUM in Shibuya, Tokyo. Organized by Parco Co., Ltd. with collaboration from Avex Creator Agency and YOUR STORY, this exhibition represents a remarkable intersection of personal and societal themes such as family, gender, sexuality, and queer identity.
Exhibition Highlights
Key elements of the exhibit include exclusive new works featuring artists Shinjiro Atae, known for his candid exploration of sexuality through his non-fiction essays, and Usak, a rising star from Taiwan who gained fame through the Netflix reality show "THE BOYFRIEND." The exhibition will also unveil a rare portrait of Audrey Tang, Taiwan's Minister of Digital Affairs, marking its first display in Japan.
As a contemporary artist, Manbo Key, born in 1986 in Taichung, has made a name for himself in various artistic realms, skillfully addressing themes of identity and family through his work. His artistic journey is deeply intertwined with his personal experiences, along with a critical reflection on societal norms surrounding sexuality.
Engaging Events and Merchandise
To commemorate the exhibition, two special events will occur. The first will be a live public stream on May 29 featuring conversations with distinguished curator Tomoko Yabumae and the artist himself, along with DJ performances from Taiwan, creating a unique atmosphere. Following this, attendees can join a Special Party curated by Manbo Key during Tokyo Pride weekend on June 6, featuring talks, DJs, dance showcases, and an art and food market.
In conjunction with the exhibition, Manbo Key's first-ever photo book, "Home Pleasure," will be released, encapsulating his artistic journey and various thematic explorations in a comprehensive volume.
Celebrating Diversity and Community
The "Home Pleasure" exhibition aims to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community while promoting understanding and awareness of diverse identities. As part of the Global Pride Month, entry is free, encouraging attendees to engage with the art and join in the celebration of love and acceptance.
Reflections from the Artists
Shinjiro Atae reflects on his experience in the exhibition, sharing, "I find myself entering Manbo's world and appreciating the various expressions within his work. It makes me happy to think people will view it from different perspectives."
In addition, Usak states, "Manbo’s photographs capture the essence of human experience, revealing those aspects we often conceal, sparking a sense of both curiosity and connection. I feel like this project allowed me to express parts of myself I had kept hidden."
