Connection Through Memory: A Reflective Event for Kids on the 15th Anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake

Connection Through Memory: A Reflective Event for Kids

On March 14, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., a significant event will take place at the Adachi Center of PAL System Tokyo in Tokyo, focusing on the memories surrounding the Great East Japan Earthquake, which struck on March 11, 2011. As we approach the 15th anniversary of this calamity, it is essential to ensure that the experiences and lessons learned from this disaster are passed down to the younger generations who were not directly affected by it.

PAL System Tokyo, led by Yoko Nishimura, the director, is organizing this unique event to help children and their families understand the importance of remembrance and empathy. The event is aimed primarily at children in elementary school and their families, with an expected participation of around 20 groups.

A Journey Through Stories and Workshops

The event will feature storytelling sessions conducted by staff from "PAL Kids Adachi," a childcare facility managed by PAL System Tokyo. They will read picture books inspired by a unique installation built in the disaster-hit areas after the earthquake—a telephone booth where people can talk to those who are no longer with them. Through these stories, children will be encouraged to grasp the sadness, teachings, and hope found in human connections that emerged after the disaster.

In addition to storytelling, there will be a workshop highlighting the creation of "Makenai Zou" (the Unbeaten Elephant), which originated in the aftermath of the 1995 Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. This initiative allows survivors to stitch donated towels into elephant shapes, the sale of which provides them with income. It is a symbol of resilience and community that was born from the need to support each other while living in temporary housing.

Tomoko Masushima, a representative from the NPO Coalition Center working in disaster-stricken areas, will also conduct a presentation. She plans to bridge connections with victims from the Noto Peninsula earthquake through an online link, sharing ongoing support efforts and important lessons learned over the years.

The Importance of Community and Support

The creation of Makenai Zou not only preserves memories of loss and pain but also strengthens communal bonds. In the workshop, Masushima, who has firsthand experience with various large-scale disaster relief efforts, will guide families in making these symbolic elephants. This activity serves as a powerful reminder of the strength found in unity.

The community created around this art project showcases how people come together to support one another as they face adversity while building a sense of identity and hope through crafts. Each crafted Makenai Zou tells a story and reinforces the message that, even in difficult times, we can rely on each other.
