BEENOS Inc., headquartered in Shinagawa, Tokyo, recently conducted a comprehensive survey titled "Cross-Border E-Commerce Awareness Survey". Engaging with 838 international users of their cross-border e-commerce service, Buyee, the survey gathered insights across various demographics ranging from individuals in their twenties to those over sixty, encompassing over 50 countries and regions.

This survey aimed to uncover the specific motivations that drive overseas users to engage with Japanese e-commerce platforms, the challenges they face during the purchasing process, the benefits they expect from buying agent services, the costs that deter them from making purchases, and the kinds of products they wish to buy in the future. By sharing these findings, BEENOS hopes to support Japanese companies striving to enter global markets.

Summary of the Survey Findings


  • - The primary reason for purchasing items from Japanese e-commerce sites is the desire to acquire goods related to Japanese brands and artists, cited by 32.8% of respondents.
  • - 68.6% mentioned giving up on attempting to buy directly from Japanese e-commerce sites, with the most significant barrier being the lack of international shipping options (69.9%).
  • - 67.0% of respondents who abandoned a potential purchase have since utilized buying agent services, valuing the convenience of consolidated packaging from multiple shops (62.1%).
  • - The most significant barrier discouraging cross-border purchases is international shipping costs, which 42.6% of users highlighted as a concern. If shipping costs were lowered, 66.2% indicated they would increase their purchase frequency and amounts.
