Transforming Memories into Sustainable Fashion: The Upcycled Tote Bag Initiative
In a remarkable collaboration, Takihyo Co., a textile trading company established in 1751, has partnered with Tokyo Bay Ariake Washington Hotel to launch an innovative project that transforms unused guestroom curtains into exclusive, upcycled tote bags. These unique products will be offered as a part of the hotel's special 'THE FUJITA MEMBERS Member-Only Renewal Plan', which is set to begin accommodating guests from July 17, 2026.
The Story Behind the Initiative
This project marks the second phase of Takihyo's collaboration with the hotel, following the successful contribution of recycled polyester items during the 30th anniversary celebration of the Yurikamome Line in October 2025. As the Tokyo Bay Ariake Washington Hotel undertakes a significant renovation of its lobby and guestrooms, it was time for the curtains—having witnessed countless guest stays—to be retired.
As part of the hotel's commitment to sustainability and Takihyo's ethos of maximizing resource utility, the two organizations found common ground. This project aims to connect the hotel’s historical resources and memories to the future, breathing new life into curtains that would otherwise be discarded. By integrating Takihyo's manufacturing expertise with the fabric destined for waste, they have creatively transformed this resource into stylish, functional tote bags that embody sustainable value.
Overview and Features of the Upcycled Tote Bags
The upcycled tote bags crafted from the hotel’s unused curtain fabric present not only a unique aesthetic but also serve an essential eco-friendly purpose.
Feature 1: Weaving Memories Through Upcycling
The tote bags utilize the actual curtain fabric that has provided comfort to hotel guests over the years. Each bag is unique, as the cutting of the fabric influences its texture, color, and patterns, creating a one-of-a-kind expression for each tote.
Feature 2: Pride in Sustainable Manufacturing
By creatively repurposing materials that were set to be disposed of, this initiative contributes to waste reduction and lessens environmental impact. The bags carry the mark of Takihyo's extensive experience in textile product planning and production, ensuring high quality while promoting eco-friendliness.
Feature 3: Co-creating Sustainability Experiences Through Hospitality
By including these tote bags as part of the exclusive member plan, guests engaging with the hotel can experience sustainability firsthand and foster an ethical awareness that they can carry into their everyday lives.
Future Outlook
As a 'Sustainable Solution Company', Takihyo aims to use this collaboration as a model to enhance similar sustainable initiatives in the hospitality industry. Working alongside partners who share a vision for effective resource utilization, Takihyo is committed to promoting sustainability and making meaningful contributions toward a better future for subsequent generations.
Comment from the Project Manager
Koshino from Takihyo's Sustainable Section expressed: “We are truly honored to have the opportunity to collaborate again on this project following our previous collaboration with the hotel. By harnessing our manufacturing expertise, we believe we have delivered a product that is warm, sustainable, and of assured quality—all while capturing the essence of the curtains that hold precious memories of hotel visitors.”
