Experience the Vibrant World of Japanese Art at the MEGURU Auction
From February 21 to March 1, 2026, the prestigious
Kashima Arts will host its 25th edition of the art auction titled
'MEGURU'. This is a unique opportunity for art enthusiasts to explore a rich collection of Japanese masterpieces from the early modern period to contemporary works, completely free of charge.
A Unique Auction Experience
Since its inception in 2019, the
'MEGURU' auction has grown significantly, now recognized as one of Japan's foremost art auctions. It highlights a diverse range of art, focusing primarily on Nihonga (Japanese-style painting), Western-style paintings, calligraphy, prints, and crafts. Each auction presents a carefully curated selection of works from across the nation, allowing both local and international art lovers to appreciate the beauty and artistry of Japan.
The upcoming 25th auction promises to be particularly notable, featuring works from legendary artists such as
Ito Jakuchu, known for his imaginative paintings;
Soga Shohaku, recognized for his bold and dramatic compositions; and
Nagasawa Rosetsu, who excelled in depicting the fleeting beauty of nature. Additionally, visitors will be treated to exquisite pieces from
Yokoyama Taikan and
Hishida Shunso, pivotal figures in modern Japanese painting. Special highlights will include
Kawase Hasui's final work and
Fujita Tsuguharu's charming depictions of cats, along with stunning pieces by
Kataoka Kyuko featuring Mount Fuji.
Focus on Otsu-e and Ito Shinsui
This year's auction also places a spotlight on
Otsu-e, a folk painting style originating in Otsu, a post town along the Tokaido road linking Edo to Kyoto. These paintings, cherished as souvenirs by travelers, reflect the everyday life and humor of the common people. At its peak, Otsu-e boasted over a hundred different motifs. Influential thinkers like
Yanagi Soetsu, who promoted the Mingei (folk craft) movement, and artists such as
Umehara Ryuzaburo have traditionally celebrated this art form. The auction will showcase eight distinct pieces, including the revered
Amitabha Triad Welcoming Figure and characteristic depictions of demons and religious scenes.
Similarly, the auction will honor the legacy of
Ito Shinsui, a key figure in the Taisho and Showa eras known for his beautiful portrayals of women. Shinsui's work, characterized by elegant brushwork and vibrant colors, conveys a sense of grace and allure. A selection of nine works featuring his iconic
'Umbrella Beauty' and serene images of young girls will be showcased.
Engage with Art Unlike Ever Before
This extraordinary event invites everyone to participate in the viewing sessions, which will occur without protective glass cases, allowing guests to closely examine the artistry and condition of the works in person. Knowledgeable staff will be available to answer any questions regarding the techniques, significance, or background of the artworks. If there are specific pieces of interest, staff members are on hand to assist with viewing.
Furthermore, every attendee will receive a complimentary original catalog featuring all exhibited pieces. Those interested in receiving a physical copy can sign up through the website, though quantities are limited.
