Henkel and Synthomer Join Forces to Reduce Carbon Emissions in Adhesives Across Global Markets

Henkel and Synthomer Unite for a Sustainable Future

In a groundbreaking initiative, Henkel, a prominent player in the adhesives industry, and Synthomer, known for their specialized polymers, have forged a strategic partnership aimed at cutting carbon emissions in the adhesive product sector. Announced from Düsseldorf, Germany, this collaboration is poised to advance sustainability within the adhesives market, focusing particularly on Henkel's TECHNOMELT® hot melt adhesive range, which serves markets across Europe, India, the Middle East, and Africa.

This partnership is more than just a business arrangement; it reflects a mutual dedication to sustainable practices in a fast-evolving consumer landscape. The collaboration follows Synthomer's recent debut of CLIMA-branded products designed to reduce carbon footprints by at least 20% during production. Their REGALITE™ line exemplifies this commitment by utilizing renewable energy throughout the manufacturing process.

Henkel and Synthomer's collaborative framework is revolutionary as it links renewable energy consumption directly to specific adhesive products. This enables precise and measurable reductions in carbon emissions, a necessity as the global push for sustainability intensifies. Henkel's ambition to cut its absolute Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030 is paralleled by Synthomer's aggressive target of a 47% reduction in direct emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by the same year, using 2019 as the reference point.

The pathway to achieving these ambitious targets involves incorporating innovative materials that have lower environmental impacts into Henkel's adhesive formulations. This effort not only aims to maintain high-quality performance standards but also significantly decreases Scope 3 emissions.

Synthomer's progressive manufacturing strategies harness renewable electricity and biogas, alongside process optimizations that contribute to a lower carbon footprint. The carbon reduction efforts from this collaboration are validated through comprehensive Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) reporting, abiding by ISO14067 standards and supported by the Together for Sustainability (TfS) guidelines. TÜV SÜD provides external validation for the PCF methodology, enhancing the credibility of the claims.

Pernille Lind Olsen, Henkel's Corporate Senior Vice President for Adhesive Technologies, emphasized the shared responsibility between industry leaders to foster significant changes. "By collaborating with suppliers like Synthomer, who prioritize transparency and innovation, we are not merely reducing emissions; we are reshaping leadership in our field."

Stephan Lynen, President of Adhesive Solutions at Synthomer, echoed this sentiment, expressing pride in supporting Henkel's vision. He highlighted Synthomer's extensive portfolio of high-performing adhesive ingredients, which can significantly contribute to sustainable supply chains and lower our planet's carbon emissions.

The integration of Synthomer's CLIMA resins into Henkel's established TECHNOMELT® range will not only diminish the environmental impact associated with adhesive products but also ensure that quality and reliability are maintained across various applications—from packaging and consumer goods to electronics and automotive sectors.

This partnership is a promising example of how cooperative efforts can spearhead progressive changes in product development and carbon footprint transparency, showcasing the potential for strategic alliances to drive industry standards toward a more sustainable future.
