Valmet Enhances Sylvamo's Paper Production with Major Rebuild Project

Valmet is preparing to initiate a significant rebuild of Sylvamo's paper machine PM 2, located in Eastover, South Carolina, by the end of 2026. This strategic endeavor includes a complete overhaul of the machine, with features such as a new headbox and various enhancements across different sections along with Industrial Internet solutions.

The order was captured in Valmet's first quarter results for 2025, although the financial details remain undisclosed. Sylvamo's Senior Vice President of Operational Excellence, Pat Wilczynski, highlighted the importance of this investment, emphasizing the commitment to improving the company's uncoated freesheet production capabilities and maintaining the Eastover mill as a competitive force in the global market.

"This modernization aligns with our goal of keeping the Eastover mill at the cutting edge of technology, ensuring we continue to produce high-quality products efficiently," Wilczynski stated.

Valmet shares their enthusiasm for this partnership. Gregory Van Handel, Corporate Account Manager for North America at Valmet, remarked, "We are thrilled to continue our work with Sylvamo. This rebuild will not only lower operational costs but will also improve production capabilities, reinforcing their commitment to technological growth."

The paper machine upgrade will feature several state-of-the-art components, including the OptiFlo Gap headbox and enhancements to the forming section through OptiFormer Gap technology. Additionally, Valmet's Industrial Internet solutions will provide ongoing support, offering connectivity and remote expert assistance via the Valmet Performance Center. The plan also includes vital automation tools, like the Valmet IQ Steam Profiler, IQ Dilution Profiler, and an expansion of the existing Valmet DNA Machine Monitoring system.
