The scholarship aims to ease the financial burdens of nursing students in the U.S., contributing towards tuition and other related expenses. Each applicant is required to craft a thoughtful 500-word essay addressing the question: "Who or what inspired you to enter the medical field?" For Michaela, the motivation to become a nurse stems from deeply personal experiences.

When reflecting on her childhood, Michaela recalls spending substantial time in hospitals and doctors’ offices due to her own health struggles. Though the specific diagnoses may blur over time, she vividly remembers the nurses who cared for her. "They were instrumental in making me feel comfortable in intimidating situations. They took the time to explain my condition, made me smile when anxiety loomed, and instinctively provided reassurance when I needed it most," she states. This formative experience laid the groundwork for her aspiration to help others in similar circumstances.

Michaela's journey didn't just stop with her own health issues; her grandfather's battle with dementia further solidified her resolve to enter the nursing profession. Her family took care of her grandmother during the COVID-19 pandemic, which proved to be a challenging yet enlightening experience. "Witnessing her struggles with memory loss was heartbreaking. It taught me the profound importance of patience, compassion, and dignity in healthcare. It wasn't just about treating a patient but being there for their families, too. This experience ignited my passion for working with elderly patients and equipped me with the understanding that nursing is a holistic practice that encompasses support for both patients and their loved ones," she shares.

Expressing heartfelt gratitude, Michaela acknowledged the Scholarship Committee for their belief in her potential. "Receiving this scholarship not only alleviates some of the financial stress of nursing school but also serves as a constant reminder that people believe in my ambitions and are willing to invest in my future. It inspires me to aspire to that level of impact on someone else’s life, to make patients feel a little less fearful and families feel a bit more supported throughout their journeys in healthcare. I hope to one day be that comforting presence that I so desperately needed during my childhood," she concluded.
