An Enthralling Play Bridging Past and Future in Okinawa

Opening Soon: A Unique Celebration of Peace in Theatre

The long-awaited stage play "Gusuyou! 'To the 32nd Army Bunker, Mensore'" is set to run from August 6 to August 10, 2025, at Theatre MOMO in Nakano, Tokyo, followed by performances on August 23 and 24 at the Okinawa City Civic Theatre Asibinā. Tickets are already available through Confetti, operated by Long Run Planning Co., Ltd.

As we mark 80 years since the end of World War II in 2025, the Okinawa Actors Group is embarking on a pioneering journey to connect the island's historical narratives to a future rooted in peace. Offering an engaging blend of comedy and poignant reminders of the past, this performance aims to give voice to the struggles and resilience of those who came before us, reminding the audience of the importance of peace.

Story Overview

The play's narrative is set in 2028, focusing on the remains of the 32nd Army Command Bunker, which was a significant site during the fierce land battles in Okinawa. As efforts to restore Shuri Castle progress, the bunker is set to open to the public in 2028. The storyline weaves together the lives of Melissa Oshima, the first peace guide for the bunker, and various spirits from the past. Through their interactions, the play humorously explores what transpired at the 32nd bunker during the Okinawa campaign and invites the audience to reflect on the conflict's legacy.

Highlights of the Performance

  • - Okinawan Actors Unite:
The star cast hails from Okinawa, bringing their unique perspectives to the stage. Even 80 years later, Okinawa still grapples with many challenges stemming from its history. Young actors, unburdened by the experiences of war, seek to unearth hope through creativity, challenging the notion of inherited trauma.

  • - "Welcome to the 32nd Army Bunker!"
The narrative begins with Melissa Oshima, the guide chosen to represent the 32nd Army Bunker, preparing for her role. As she encounters various spirits who have their own stories and motivations concerning the bunker and the Okinawa campaign, it sets up a comedic yet serious exploration of the events surrounding WWII in Okinawa.

  • - Artwork by EITEN:
The striking design of the promotional flyer has been created by the artist EITEN, whose work has garnered acclaim both domestically and internationally. For those who support the performance through the "support ticket," an original labeled bottle of Okinawan Imo Shōchū will be offered, designed based on EITEN's artwork, providing a unique memento of the event.
