The Japan Theme Fund is targeted to raise between $50 million and $100 million. It aims to generate collaborative opportunities between Japanese companies and Southeast Asian startups. The fund will not only promote business partnerships and market entry for effective startups in the region but also provide support and investment for Japanese startups seeking to expand their operations in Southeast Asia.

Investors in this fund include notable entities such as Cool Japan Fund, a Japanese public-private fund, Bank Danamon Indonesia, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Rohto Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., Advas, Culture Convenience Club Co., Ltd., and Sinar Mas Land itself.

Background for Establishment

The startup investment market in Japan is rapidly growing, projected to reach approximately $20 billion by 2024 and $85.8 billion by 2033. Simultaneously, Southeast Asia is witnessing a surge in technology firms due to its youth demographic and advancing digitalization. The region's startup investments have reached around $27 billion as of 2023, primarily benefiting from robust growth in Indonesia, Singapore, and Vietnam. Notably, sectors such as fintech, healthcare, clean technology, and AI have seen a rise in the creation of unicorn companies.

Amid this promising landscape, the Japan Theme Fund seeks to combine Japan's technological prowess and managerial precision with Southeast Asia's market expansion potential and growth, ultimately aiming to contribute to the development of both territories.
