Meijer Expands Community Reach with New Supercenters
On May 9, 2025, Meijer officially opened the doors to three brand-new supercenters located in Austintown, Medina, and Richmond Heights, Ohio. Spanning an impressive 159,000 square feet each, these structures are set to provide a comprehensive shopping experience that emphasizes convenience, quality, and a value-conscious approach to grocery shopping.
Renowned for its extensive selection of fresh produce and low prices, Meijer offers a wide range of staples, including organic items certified by the USDA. Customers can also find a robust deli and butchery section, highlighting the retailer's commitment to quality. The new supercenters feature full-service pharmacies, general merchandise sections, as well as specialized departments dedicated to baby and pet supplies, clothing, beauty products, floral arrangements, and gardening needs.
One of the key innovative features of the newly launched locations is their implementation of digital shopping solutions. The
Shop & Scan service allows shoppers to utilize their mobile devices to scan barcodes as they shop, making the checkout process seamlessly quick. Moreover, the
Flashfood app offers discounts on surplus food items, while services like Meijer Home Delivery and Pickup enhance shopping convenience. Additionally, the
mPerks rewards program enables customers to accumulate savings with every dollar spent.
Hank Meijer, the executive chairman, expressed his pride in continuing the company’s family-oriented legacy of 90 years, stating, “We are honored to extend our unique shopping experience to even more communities.” He emphasized the company's ongoing commitment to investing in local neighborhoods and building meaningful partnerships with local organizations.
Meijer's presence in Ohio dates back to 1981, and over the past few years, the retailer has dedicated more than $500 million to enhance the northeastern region, focusing on store openings and renovations, job creation, and supporting local non-profit missions. Presently, Meijer employs over 12,000 individuals across 58 locations, including its distribution and manufacturing centers in Tipp City.
Rick Keyes, the president, and CEO of Meijer, assured customers of the teams' dedication at the new stores, saying, “Our teams are committed to delivering value and comfort to our customers.” There were celebratory moments as store directors welcomed the community with applauses, marking the opening with a ceremonial ribbon cutting alongside Meijer family members.
In a demonstration of their community commitment prior to the grand opening, Meijer gifted a total of $90,000 to ten local organizations. The donations included contributions to The Hope Foundation in Austintown, the Children's Center of Medina County, and the Richmond Heights Education Foundation, among others. Meijer’s annual philanthropy includes donating a minimum of 6% of its net profits back to community initiatives, showcasing its dedication in fighting hunger and support for food banks.
Since 2008, the Simply Give program has raised over $100 million to support food pantry partners throughout the Midwest. The newly opened stores have chosen local food partners to work with, including Austintown Community Church, Feeding Medina County, and The Bin Food Pantry from Richmond Heights.
Continuing its commitment to accessibility, these new supercenters have introduced larger, height-adjustable changing stations in family restrooms, ensuring facilities are welcoming for customers with disabilities. As with all Meijer locations, the new supercenters provide free access to Aira, an application-based service that offers live navigation assistance for customers who are blind or have low vision.
Founded as a private, family-owned retail company, Meijer has evolved to serve its community through more than 500 supercenters and grocery stores. With over 70,000 team members, Meijer aims to provide a pleasant and simplified shopping experience while offering various high-quality food, apparel, personal care items, as well as health and wellness services. The retailer is consistently recognized as an excellent workplace and remains committed to community-driven initiatives.
